2 THE ENLIGHTENMENT The age of reason (1650-1815)
The Enlightenment was a radical change in thinking about the world. The ideals and thoughts coming out of The Enlightenment would influence the American and French Revolutions. Would question if kings had the right to rule over people.

3 Thinkers of The Enlightenment
Baron de Montesquieu ( ) Montesquieu’s thoughts and writings said that the government’s powers should be separated into different branches. If one person or branch got too much power it would lead to tyranny.

4 Thinkers of The Enlightenment
John Locke ( ) His writings led to the belief in “natural rights”. Rights are things we are born with they are not given by the government. Men enter into “social contracts” to form governments in order to protect their rights.

5 Documents before The Constitution
Magna Carta (1215) English Bill of Rights (1689) Document that limited the power of the king. First time the king agrees that his power is not absolute. Document that protected certain rights of the people from being taken away by the king.
