2018 Theme TEAM D.A.B.: SAVE WATER. SAFE WATER.
Our theme relates to four aspects of water and safety. Those aspects are: Fire Protection Pollution & Water Quality Conservation Safety Around Water
3
Hi, I’m Drippy the Water Droplet!
Today, we’re going to learn about each of the four themes for the program! Then, you’re going to draw me a picture to show me something you liked or something you learned. Your picture is going to go through a judging process, where winners will get prizes!
4
Hi, I’m Amie Ba… the good microbe! A microbe is a very tiny living creature. Even tinier than a bug! I’m so small you would need a powerful microscope to see me! I represent wastewater and reclaimed (recycled water). I thought that I would just stop by to say “Hi!” You may see me again some day. Amie Ba
5
Pop Quiz Name one of the four topics, we’re going to learn about:
Fire protection, conservation, pollution/water quality, and safety around water What is our friend the water droplet’s name? Drippy Bonus Question: Who is the “good microbe”?
6
Are you ready to learn about fire protection???
7
Fire Protection Key Ideas
Water utilities keep communities safe by taking care of fire hydrants. Fire departments use hydrants to fill their trucks or to put out fires. Testing hydrants and reporting broken hydrants is important.
8
Fire Protection Facts about Fire Protection
Pasco County has over 8,000 fire hydrants. Firefighters put out over 300,000 fires in the state of Florida in 2016. FGUA and Pasco County Utilities support the fire department by making sure the hydrants are working.
9
Fire Protection How Fire Hydrants Work
Hydrants are connected to the same pipes that give you drinking water. Pumps at water treatment plants create the water pressure.
10
Fire Protection Fire Safety
Leave everything behind, get out, and ask someone to call 911. Stop, drop, and roll if you’re on fire. Create a fire escape plan and practice it twice a year. Remind your parents to test smoke alarms every month.
11
Pop Quiz What should you do in case of fire?
Call 911. Stop, drop, and roll if on fire. Stay away from it. What would happen if there were no hydrants? The fire department wouldn’t be able to put out fire quickly. How many hydrants are in Pasco County? Over 8,000!
12
Fire Protection Brainstorming Drawing Ideas Drippy & a fire hydrant
Person repairing a fire hydrant A neighborhood that is safe because of fire hydrants Any others??? Be creative!
13
Are you ready to learn about pollution???
Water Quality Are you ready to learn about pollution???
14
Pollution & Water Quality
Key Ideas Water utilities have a responsibility to provide safe drinking water. People and animals can get sick from polluted water.
15
Pollution & Water Quality
Water Cycle Everything is connected. When one person pollutes, we all suffer.
16
Pollution & Water Quality
Facts about Pollution & Water Quality Utilities look at water under a microscope regularly to look for germs. Drinking reclaimed water (purple pipes) can cause sickness and its meant just for plants.
17
Pollution & Water Quality
What Do Utilities Do to Keep You Safe? Test the water for different chemicals and bacteria. Issue notices and provide reports to the public. Kill germs or make adjustments if there is anything unsafe in the aquifer.
18
Pollution & Water Quality
How Can We Keep Water Clean? Don’t litter or throw things out of the car, it’ll end up in the ocean. Try not to put things that can be recycled down the drain.
19
Pop Quiz Why is it important to not litter and for utilities to test drinking water? To keep water clean and safe What would happen if you were to drink water from a purple pipe? You could get sick Where does most litter come from in Pasco? Cars and pedestrians
20
Pollution & Water Quality
Brainstorming Drawing Ideas Drippy fighting germs so people can have safe drinking water. Scientist looking for germs in a cup of water under a microscope. Poster with slogan regarding the importance of not putting trash in water. Any others??? Be creative!
21
Are you ready to learn how to save water???
Conservation Are you ready to learn how to save water???
22
Conservation Key Ideas
There is a limited supply of fresh water on Earth. Wasteful use of water can be avoided by doing simple things like looking for leaks. Changes in our habits can also reduce water use.
23
Conservation TASTY! YUCK! Facts about Conservation
Only 2.5% of the Earth’s water is fresh water (UN Water) TASTY! YUCK!
24
Conservation Facts about Conservation
A leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. The average person in the Tampa Bay area uses 111 gallons per day for all of their needs. (SWFWMD) Imagine 111 of these. Now imagine 200 of these.
25
Conservation What Can You Do to Save Water?
Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Take quick showers and only flush the toilet when you need to. Help your parents find leaks, so that they can fix them.
26
Conservation How Do Utilities Save Water?
Utilities save water by limiting how much they pump from the aquifer. We also encourage customers to find and fix any leaks.
27
Pop Quiz Why is it important to save water?
There is a limited supply of fresh water on Earth. How many gallons of water does an average person use in our area per day? 111 gallons How can you help to conserve water? Turn off the water when you brush your teeth, take quick showers, only flush toilets when you need to, and help your parents find leaks
28
Conservation Brainstorming Drawing Ideas
Illustrate how little water there is available for drinking on Earth. Parent fixing a leak in their home to save water. Poster with slogan related to wasteful water use. Any others??? Be creative!
29
Are you ready to learn how to be safe around water???
Safety Around Water Are you ready to learn how to be safe around water???
30
Safety Around Water Key Ideas
Electricity and water can be very dangerous. Learning how to swim can prevent drowning. Touching boiling water can cause burns. Ice and spilled water can cause accidents and injuries.
31
Safety Around Water Facts about Water Safety
Inflatable toys are fun to play with, but they are not meant to keep you safe. It is important to learn to swim by taking lessons. Using the Buddy System when swimming can prevent injuries. Swimming during a thunderstorm is dangerous.
32

33
Safety Around Water How can you prevent getting hurt around water?
Stay away from electricity Avoid boiling water Clean up spills and ice Learn to swim Swim with a buddy
34
Safety Around Water Brainstorming Drawing Ideas
Picture of Drippy and a parent watching kids swim in a pool. Children picking up ice to prevent falls or avoiding boiling water to prevent burns. Showing how water and electricity do not mix and can cause injuries. Any others??? Be creative!
