Bringing Research into Focus
Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice Bringing Research into Focus Leading Colleagues in Using Research Driving Changes in Practice Introduce the three segments of the presentation and give a sentence or two about each.
14
Types of Research Quantitative Qualitative Mixed Methods
Used to quantify the problem by generating numerical data Explores common or shared experiences to uncover trends in a problem Combines qualitative and quantitative to best understand research problem Includes experimental, correlation, or survey research Includes grounded, ethnographic, or narrative research Includes action research Facilitator: provide an overview of the flowchart. Facilitator gives non-education examples of each to deepen participants understanding. Participants will read the flowchart and turn and talk: which which type of research appeals to you and why. If you were going to do quantitative research, what types of problems would you be addressing; qualitative? After 10 minutes of discussion, ask for an idea from each table. The purpose is to check in with participants to see what they know and understand and what questions they have.

Quotes Activity Why use research?

Action Research Literature Review
The process – quick overview before we break it down. Where do you begin? We will walk through the process together.
17
Quotes From the Field Research in Action My research gave me the confidence to stand up for practices that work. Findings and evidence from my research back up the educational choices I am advocating for. I know what I believe, and the evidence gathered through my research helps me explain the reasoning and the results. Tosha Caston-Smith, Teacher
18
Quotes From the Field Research in Action I would say that this class made me confident in my ability to execute a small-scale research project in my classroom or school and apply the findings to my practice. Being able to do this will make me a better teacher, as I can make data-driven decisions as to what's best for my students. Being able to share this skill set with others will also help further me as a teacher leader. Leslie LaRocca, Teacher/Student
19
Bringing Research Into Focus has three components: Explain a sentence or two about each component.
20
Model Research Practices
Read/Access current research Subscribe to professional journals Follow research practices on social media Disseminate research results through publication, conferences Conduct a book study Exhibit a growth mindset Model best practices Use formative assessments Collaborate with colleagues Join a school improvement committee Set goals for professional improvement
21
Facilitate Research Practices
Encourage others to conduct research Help structure action research design Design workshops Provide technological support; workshops Troubleshoots problems Peer Review Liaison with partners Mentor new teachers Lead/facilitate data analysis Understand Adult learning Engage with a collaborative spirit Help others recover from set backs
22
Build Research Partnerships
Build relationships with: School board District office Parent Teacher Organizations DOE Colleagues Professional Learning Communities; Teams, X-Teams Community members and organizations Local Universities Local youth organizations Developing Trust Understand school culture Utilize data to look for ways to improve learning; message and communicate data
23
Use Research to Inform Policy
Advocate research findings to support policy Present data to colleagues, at school board meetings, at meetings with legislators Use data to advocate use of best practices
