2. Intro
The greeks did not understand nature so they blamed it on spirits
They also starting wondering about themselves and assumed their destiny was controlled by invisible spirits
Storytellers made up myths about these spirits and told like they were humans
They were them gods and goddesses
Every town had their own deities

3. Hesiod
A Boeotian poet of 8th century Bce. He wrote the Theogony that brought together many Greek myths and offered the greek version of the creation of the earth.

4. The Creation • First came Chaos (confusion)
• Out of confusion came mother earth
• Then the sky
•Next a huge sea surrounded Gaea
The Greeks thought that southern europe , western asia, and northern africa made up the earth surrounded by an infinite ocean.
They also believed the earth was flat and there was a huge dome above it where the heavens were then below them were an underworld.

5. The Titans The kids of Gaea and Uranus were Titans
Not only did they have titans but also cyclopes
Uranus banished them to the tartus
Gaea was so mad she attacked uranus was a sharp
flint sickle
Uranus was soon after that banished
He told cronus

7. Titans(con) Later Cronus became king

Every child he had with Rhea he ate
When Rhea was having her 6th child
she went to Mt. Lycaeum to have the baby.
After he was born he was taken to mt.
Ida in Crete

8. The Titans (again) Now Zeus was full grown. Rhea wanted him to be king
So now he worked in the kingdom as a Royal cup bearer
Zeus made a very poisonous drink for Cronus
Cronus became very ill and spit out the other five children
All the children attacked Cronus and drove him away
After Cronus was gone they went to liberate the cyclopes from tartus.
For the Cyclope’s gratitude they gave:
Thunderbolts for Zeus
A magical helmet for Hades
A forked trident for Poseidon

9. The Olympians Some of the Olympians were Zeus’s children Apollo
Artemis
Ares
Hephaestus
Athena
Other Olympians were…….

10. Other Olympians Aphrodite (goddess of love)
Hera (protectors of wives and mothers)
Poseidon (god of the sea)
Demeter (goddess of the harvest and fertility)
Hestia (goddess of family)
Hermes ( god of thieves, business , and mischief)
Hades (god of the underworld)
Dionysus (god of wine)
