2 Post –War Occupation of Germany
Germany was divided into 4 military zones Each zone was controlled by one of the major Allied Powers: Great Britain, The United States, France, and the Soviet Union This division help expedite the German surrender and rebuilding The Capital city of Berlin was like wise divided into four sections The city itself was located entirely within the Soviet controlled eastern portion of Germany This left the western-controlled area of the city completely surrounded by Soviet-dominated West Germany

3 The Division of Germany
This map shows the division of Germany, as well as the division of the City of Berlin into four military zones. Note that the location of West Berlin leaves it surrounded on all sides by Cold War enemies.

4 The German Democratic Republic
Country born from the Soviet occupied zone in eastern Germany Politics and foreign affairs dominated by the Soviet Union as a puppet state Constant state of hostilities With its western neighbor The entirety of the city of Berlin is located in the German Democratic Republic Socialist and communist state

5 Federal Republic Of Germany
Free and Democratic German state in the western part of divided Germany Allies with the United States Struggles with its communist neighbor Capital moved to the city of Bonn

6 The United Nations Established after World War II
International Peacekeeping body Made up of two main bodies: Security Council Permanent membership composed of the five major powers after World War II: The United States of America, Great Britain, The Soviet union, France, and China. Dealt with large issues of war and peace Each permanent member could veto any decision made by the Security Council General Assembly Included representatives from any nation that wished to join Each member nation had an equal vote and equal voice
