Since they lack official authority, what kinds of things can they do?
NGOs are… Dedicated to voicing the concerns of global citizens who might not otherwise have their own voice. Focused on making the world a better place. Question to ask: Since they lack official authority, what kinds of things can they do?

NGOs focus on… Creating awareness of situations that need the attention of the global community. Providing direct aid to people in need. Working towards freedom and equality for all. Working to support rights and freedoms of oppressed groups, including women and children.

Oxfam A group of over 15 different organizations working together.
Working to find lasting solutions to poverty and related injustice worldwide. Four major goals: Economic Justice Essential Services Rights in Crisis Gender Justice

Amnesty International
A group that works to ensure that the rights enshrined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are respected worldwide. Major goal: to free “prisoners of conscience”. Observes a “non-violence clause.”

Greenpeace A group that works to “nurture life in all its diversity” (Greenpeace.org) Focuses on raising awareness about global warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, and anti-nuclear issues. Organize high-profile protests against actions that threaten the environment.

Red Cross/Crescent Created by a 19th century doctor, Jean-Henri Dunant. Provides disaster relief and assists victims of war. Volunteers provide victims with medical treatment and other necessities. Campaign against land mines and other weapons responsible for collateral damage.

MSF (Médecins sans frontières)
Otherwise known as Doctors Without Borders. They believe that humanitarian agencies have the right to interfere in order to save lives. Funded by private donations. Dedicated to providing medical relief to those in need due to disasters, poverty, or war.
