In my district, it’s also a chance for students to share ideas and reflect on the world around them. They are reminded to live life differently because they are writers. They are encouraged to notice small moments and capture them in their entries. Digital tools can help aid and enhance the writing process.

13. 1. Add a new book
Tap the 'New book' button at the top left of the screen.

14. Choose a Shape for your Book
You'll then choose the shape of your book from the 3 available options, portrait, square or landscape (or choose a comic layout). This decides which shape an individual page will be. Note: you cannot change the shape of your book once you have chosen.

15. Choose Your Front Cover
Let's start by choosing a nice bright colour for the background of the page. Tap the 'Inspector' button in the top right of the screen to choose a colour for your background.
Choose from one of the standard colours or tap 'Custom' to choose the particular colour you want.

16. Add Some Text
OK, we're ready to give our book a title (make sure you've chosen a good one!). Tap the + icon and choose 'Add Text'. Type your text into the window and press Done when finished.
If you need to change or add to the text, just touch the text and it will bring the editing window and keyboard up again.
If you make a mistake, you can always tap the Undo button in the top menu.

17. Edit the Text
So now you'll have some pretty standard black text on the page. Let's bring it to life a little.
First, you can change the width and height of the text box by dragging the blue handles to the size you want.
Next, whilst the text is still highlighted with the blue border, press the 'Inspector' button to access the style menu. You can adjust the size, colour, and style of the text to your heart's content.

18. Add an Image
Tap the + icon. You can either choose Camera and take a photo there and then, or you can choose a photo already saved on your iPad photo library.
Find the photo you want to use and select it to make it appear in your book. You can then resize it if you wish.

19. Locking an Image in Place

Let's say you're creating a template book and you to keep items locked in position.
Simply long tap on the text, image, audio hotspot or video and choose Lock from the sub-menu.
The item is now locked in place. With text - the neat thing is that the text can still be edited, so you could add some dummy text like in the example below.
To unlock an item, long tap on it again and you'll see the option, or highlight it and tap on the Inspector.

20. Add a New Page
Adding a new page is a simple matter of tapping the large + button on the right of the screen, or you can use the Pages button in the top menu.
Note that your first 2 pages are already added for you, so from the cover page, tap the > button to start adding text and images to the rest of your book.

21. Preview in iBooks
To preview your book whilst you're creating it, you can use the shortcut from the toolbar and open it in iBooks.
Just make sure you've got the iBooks app installed first, and tap the Export icon, which is in the far right corner. Now tap the iBooks icon.
An ePub version of your book will open in iBooks immediately, enabling you to preview your work so far, and enjoy the page-turning fun!

22. Other Opening Options
From the My Books screen, tap the export icon (the one on the right beneath your book) and choose Export as ePub (for reading in iBooks), Export as PDF (for printing/sharing), or Export as a Video (for posting on the web).
You can also tap the book to open it and then tap the export symbol (square with the arrow) to open it directly in iBooks, iTune U, Google Drive, Schoology, and more options.

24. Changing Display Settings
You can choose how your book displays when you export it to iBooks. Tap the Inspector beneath your book on the My Books page and choose iBook display settings.
If you choose Side by side pages, your book will have the page-turning effect in iBooks. Single pages will display your pages one by one, with a sliding effect from page to page as you swipe between them.

25. Getting Videos onto Your iPad
Book Creator imports videos from your iPad’s Photo Library. For video recorded using your iPad’s camera just select them from your Photo Library exactly as you would for an image.
If you have video on a desktop computer that you would like to add to your book, you can sync the videos to your iPad using iTunes. To do this connect your iPad to your computer and then in iTunes ensure the Photo syncing options include your videos.

Tap on Link and in the displayed window you can provide the link itself, and also the optional title text displayed for the link.

37. Your Task --Create a book to be judged!
Working collaboratively? You can work on separate books (and even on separate iPads) and then combine them all into one book when you're finished.
The pages of other books can be added to the end of the final book you want to create.
How it's done using Book Creator:
From the My Books screen, select the book you want to be the final book (i.e. the book you want to copy the other books to).
Tap the + icon and choose Combine Books.
Choose the book you want and tap Copy to add all of its pages to the end of your current book.
Repeat as many times as you need for other books.
Caution: choosing a book layout
You can only combine books which have the same layout as the current book (e.g. portrait, square or landscape).
*We will use polleverywhere to choose our favorite story/book!*
