8. SAFETY PROGRAM New Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Chemical Classification System
Established so that all data safety sheets look the same worldwide.
MSDS now known as SDS – manufacturers supposed to have had all SDS completed by June, 2015.
By Dec. 2013, you should have completed employee training on new forms, labels and pictograms.
By June 1, 2016 you must update your written hazard communication program to include GHS components.

9. SAFETY PROGRAM Record Keeping & Reporting
Employers with 11 or more employees must maintain records of occupational injuries and illnesses as they occur and retain them for 5 years.
Annual summaries of the injury and illness logs must be posted at your workplace from Feb. 1 thru April 30 of each year.
Any workplace incident that results in a fatality must be reported to the nearest OSHA office within 8 hrs. Any workplace incident that results in the in-patient hospitalization of 1 or more employees must be reported to the nearest OSHA area office within 24 hours.
No matter how many employees your workplace has, you must display OSHA posters that inform employees of their job safety rights.

10. SAFETY PROGRAM Personal Protective Equipment
PPE is specialized clothing or equipment worn by employees for the protection of many parts of the body including eyes, head, face, hands, feet and ears.
Employer must: * conduct a written hazard evaluation of the workplace to identify employee hazards and the PPE necessary to protect them.
* train each employee required to use PPE.
* make PPE available to employees or require that employers provide their own PPE.

11. SAFETY PROGRAM Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Sample written hazard evaluation
Hard hat, safety goggles and foot protection are required if using hoist or lift.
Safety goggles must be worn during fluid evacuation procedures.
Safety goggles and chemical resistant gloves must be worn when using solvent parts washer.
Safety goggles and foot protection are required when handling bolt cutters, saws and other similar tools.

12. SAFETY PROGRAM Eye Wash Station
Install/Maintain an OSHA approved 15-minute eye wash station(s) where corrosive materials are being used (battery storage, processing and recharge areas).
Provide annual training to employees on location and use of eye wash station.
Complete emergency eye wash protection plan (sample plan available) and retain a copy in safety records.

13. SAFETY PROGRAM Fire Extinguisher Checklist
A multi-purpose ABC rated portable fire extinguisher is appropriate for an automotive recycling facility.
Maintain fire extinguishers in a fully charged and operable condition.
Document inspections and annual maintenance on a tag affixed to each extinguisher.
Train employees on fire prevention and emergency response.

Comply with minimum requirements for workplace first aid kits

15. SAFETY PROGRAM Spill Clean-Up Kit
Maintain a spill kit(s) that contain appropriate absorbents and/or containment devices to handle the type and amount of fluids that could be released.
Provide and document training to appropriate workers on how to properly manage fluids, prevent spills and leaks, respond to and clean up a spill and dispose of used absorbents.

16. SAFETY PROGRAM Forklift Training
Any employee who operates a forklift must be trained and certified. The training addresses forklift design and parts, operation, driving rules, and maintenance requirements. Operator’s performance must be evaluated at least every three (3) years.

17. OSHA INSPECTIONS
Automotive recycling facilities are subject to OSHA inspections, most of which are conducted without advance notice.
OSHA inspector is authorized to inspect conditions, structures, machines, apparatus, devices, equipment, and materials during regular work hours.
You should ask for proper identification and also confirm that the inspector understands that your facility is designated by the standard industrial code (SIC), NOT the 5013 code (which receives many more violations than our code).
Inspector may question privately any employee.
OSHA has up to six (6) months after an inspection to issue a final report of the inspection. The OSHA area director then determines if any citation will be issued and what penalties will be proposed.
You can appeal the citations and penalties within 15 working days after receiving the citation.
