Practical Production and Evaluation 3 Minute Music Video word evaluation Covers all 4 key media concepts.

5 Controlled Assessment 3
Candidates should plan and research their production thoroughly. Evidence of research into existing products of a similar nature and into their potential audience should be submitted. Candidates will need to submit evidence of planning, perhaps in the form of briefs, sketches, scripts, storyboards, mock-ups, drafts, contact sheets, flat plans etc.

6 Controlled Assessment 3
You may complete filming outside of school but: We must see your planning BEFORE. The quality of work must be consistent with your previous work.

8 MUSIC VIDEO CODES AND CONVENTIONS
With a partner: List 10 things that you would expect to see in a music video. 3 mins

9 MUSIC VIDEO CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Andrew Goodwin’s theory on music videos states all music videos will contain some or all of the following elements:

10 LINK BETWEEN VISUALS AND LYRICS
Does what the singer is saying relate to what is being shown? If an artist is singing about a break-up, do they look sad or are they dressed in dark colours to represent their mood?

11 LINK BETWEEN VISUALS AND MUSIC
Does what we see match the music? For example: Is the editing in time with the beat? Are there dance routines? Where is it set (e.g. Urban settings for Hip Hop)? etc…….

12 GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
What do we expect to see from a music video in a certain genre? For example:

13 R&B / Hip Hop Would you expect to see Jay Z……

14 Rock Would you expect to see Aerosmith

15 INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
Does the video have references to films, TV Shows or other music videos. Could be pastiche or parody. For example………

16 INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES – MARILYN MONROE

17 INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
MATERIAL GIRL - MADONNA

18 INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
ADDICTED TO LOVE – ROBERT PALMER

19 INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
MAN I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN – SHANIA TWAIN

20 NOTIONS OF LOOKING This can be either:
Screens within screens – Characters in the video are seen watching TV or at the cinema. Characters are seen looking through telescopes, binoculars, a camera etc. People in the video are seen looking at one specific person (usually the lead singer).

21 OBJECTIFICATION OF FEMALES
Females in the video are used as a focus of desire for either the audience or the characters within the video. Often dancers or other superficial roles within the video. This links to Male Gaze.

22 DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL
How do the record label want the artist to look (representation)? This will usually include lots of close ups of the lead singer. Are there any symbols or motifs that are associated with the artist?

23 STYLE OF VIDEO Is the video: Performance based? Narrative based?
Concept based?
