1 “bunny-hops” or “ladder steps” or “decimal moving”
Metric Conversions “bunny-hops” or “ladder steps” or “decimal moving”

2 The Metric System Metric System  is an international standardized system of units of measurement used by ALL scientist around the globe Metric System  is based on a base unit and prefixes length mass volume time

3 Base Units for Measurements
Length (distance, height)  measures the distance between 2 endpoints; is measured by a meterstick (mm, cm, m, km) Mass  measures the amount of matter in an object; is measured by a scale Volume  measures the amount of space something takes up; is measured by a bottle

4 Base Unit for Length The basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter (m) Metric Units of Length Kilometer (km) = 1000 m Hectometer (hm) = 100 m Decameter (dam) = 10 m Meter (m) = 1 m Decimeter (dm) = 0.1 m Centimeter (cm) = 0.01 m Millimeter (mm) = m 1 meter = 40inches

5 Base Unit for Mass The basic unit of mass in the metric system is a gram (g) 1Metric Units of Mass Kilogram (kg) = 1000 g Hectogram (hg) = 100 g Decagram (dag) = 10 g Gram (g) = 1 g Decigram (dg) = 0.1 g Centigram (cg) = 0.01 g Milligram (mg) = g 1 kg = 2.2lbs

6 Base Unit for Volume The basic unit of volume in the metric system is a liter (L) Metric Units of Capacity Kiloliter (kL) = 1000 L Hectoliter (hL) = 100 L Decaliter (daL) = 10 L Liter (L) = 1 L Deciliter (dL) = 0.1 L Centiliter (cL) = 0.01 L Milliliter (mL) = L

7 Base Units for Measurements
Other Types of measurement include: Time (seconds, hours) Temperature (˚C) Density (g/mL, g/cm3)

8 k h da d c m The Metric System
To CONVERT units within the metric system, write the prefixes in order from largest to smallest k h da d c m It is the same system regardless if you are measuring length, mass, or volume To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, move to the left To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, move to the right

9 The Metric System k h da d c m
To convert from a smaller unit to a LARGER UNIT, move to the left EXAMPLE Convert 45 cm to km EXAMPLE Convert 1600 cm to m EXAMPLE Convert 3 mL to L

10 The Metric System k h da d c m
To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, move to the right EXAMPLE Convert 241 g to mg EXAMPLE Convert 2 kL to L EXAMPLE Convert 5.4 kg to dg

11 the digits are NOT changing, the position of the decimal IS changing
The Metric System the digits are NOT changing, the position of the decimal IS changing
