2 Standards of Measurement
Units and Standards A unit is the actual single quantity used to measure….a measurement is made of a number and unit…always write the unit with the value. A standard is an exact quantity that people use for comparison.
2
Measurement Systems We currently use the English system.
Most scientists use the International System, or metric system.
3
The Metric System Steps
4
The Metric Prefixes
5
Converting Between SI Units Move the decimal left or right, the number of places equal to the steps
6
Measuring Distance Length is a distance between 2 points.
Choose a unit of length similar or useful for your distance.
7
Measuring Volume The space occupied by an object is volume.
Volume can also be the space inside a measuring container. The volume of a rectangular space is V=LxWxH
8
Measuring Matter Mass is the measurement of the amount of matter in an object. Density = Mass/Volume Density is a derived unit, because it is derived from 2 other SI units. Density of the object is the same, no matter how much you have.
9
Time and Temperature The SI unit for time is the second.
We use the Celsius scale for temperature. Often, you may see temperature in Kelvins….the unit is the same size as the degree Celsius, but is shifted by 273. K= o C o C = K C=5(F-32)/9
