Bell Ringer Using the textbook’s glossary, define the following vocabulary words in your science notebook. Put these definitions in your notes section, NOT BELL RINGER SECTION!! Motion Reference point Meter (The books are on the back table.)
2
Bell Ringer 1. Write the metric system in order from greatest to least. Do the following conversions: kL = ______ L cm = ______ mm mg = ______ g daL = ______ mL
3
Objectives ALCOS Objective # 1 ALCOS Objective # 8
Identify steps within the scientific process Applying process skills to interpret data from graphs. ALCOS Objective # 8 Identify Newton’s three laws of motion.
4
Chapter 9 Section 1 Motion
5
How do you know an object is in motion?
How can you decide if an object is moving slowly or quickly? Are you “moving” right now?
6
What is motion? Motion is the state in which one object’s distance from another is changing. Motion involves a change in position.
7
An object changes position relative to a reference point
An object changes position relative to a reference point. A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion.
8
Distance When you measure distance, you are measuring length. (unit = _____) Distance is the total length of the route an object travels when it moves.
9
Graphing Motion Motion can be graphed on a distance-time graph with the time plotted on the horizontal axis and distance plotted on the vertical axis. A horizontal line on a distance-time graph indicates that there is no change in distance.
