18 Mmmmmm, Delicious: Context Quotation Analysis
Slim is the most respected man on the ranch. In chapter two he was described as very calm, and “there was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (Steinbeck 33). This description, given when we first meet Slim, shows the attitude of others toward him. This scene foreshadows Candy looking to Slim for a reversal on the decision to shoot his dog. Candy does so, because Slim’s word is law and he is the only one that can change the decision of the men. 21 Mr. Short’s Book: Please pretend Mr. Short has written a book.
In this book, citations are discussed.

22 Citations: Proper Punctuation
Mr. Short said, “the quote will start with a lower case letter if you lead into it” (Short 4). “The quote will be capitalized if it begins the sentence,” according to our teacher (Short 5). Any punctuation used in the quote will remain. The author and page number will be in parenthesis after the quote. Author name and page number must be included in the citation. The period goes after the parenthesis.

23 Quote Sandwich: Slim is the most respected man on the ranch. In chapter two he was described as very calm, and “there was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (Steinbeck 33). You MUST include the author’s name and page number of the words you are using. This can be differentiated. 23

24 Variation: Slim is the most respected man on the ranch. In section two he was described as very calm, and “there was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (Steinbeck 33). Author name & page number AFTER Slim is the most respected man on the ranch. In section two Steinbeck described him as very calm, and “there was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (33). Author name BEFORE ======= Page number AFTER 24
