1 DNA Structure Unit 3A: Day Two DNA/RNA

2 Today 3/1 Obtain sticky note and respond to prompt on large sticky note on board Be sure to include your name and WHY you wrote the person you did Turn in webquest

3

4 Who first determined the structure of DNA?
James Watson & Francis Crick used other scientists data to determine the structure of DNA

5

6 Deoxyribonucleic Acid
What does DNA stand for?? Deoxyribonucleic Acid

7 What is DNA’s function To store hereditary information that makes up each living organism

8 DNA Structure REMEMBER: Our 4th Macromolecule Polymer= Nucleic Acid
Monomer= Nucleotide

9 3 Parts of a Nucleotide: a. Phosphate b. deoxyribose (sugar)
c. nitrogen base

10 DNA structure Called double helix b/c it looks like a twisted ladder.
“Sides” of ladder are made up of alternating phosphates and deoxyribose (sugar) molecules “Rungs” of ladder are made up of pairs of nitrogen bases.

11

12 Nitrogen bases always pair up in the following way:
Adenine pairs with Thymine Guanine pairs with Cytosine EXAMPLE: AGC TAC GCA TCG ATG CGT One side of DNA Other side of DNA

13 Practice with the example on your notesheet!

14

15 What does the order tell us?
What proteins will be made that will eventually lead to visible traits

16

17

18

19 A human genome looks like this…

20 X 100,000,000!!

21 Finding specific causes for certain traits is like finding a needle in a haystack…

22 Like finding a misspelled word in the Library of Congress
Over 530 miles of bookshelves

23 What does the order of nitrogen bases tell us?
Traits a person has Physical characteristics How the organism functions

24

25 What is RNA? RNA stands for: RiboNucleic Acid Function:
a. carries out protein synthesis How is RNA different from DNA? a. Has ribose instead of deoxyribose b. single stranded c. Uses uracil to bind with adenine instead of thymine.

26 What are 3 types of RNA? a. Messenger RNA (mRNA): carries nucleotide sequence from nucleus to ribosome b. Transfer RNA (tRNA): picks up amino acid in cytoplasm and carries them to ribosome c. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA): found in ribosome, joins mRNA and tRNA; forms protein

27 And a bio pick-up line…

28 For more watch this video:

29 Quiz 1 In DNA, adenine always bonds with ?
a. cytosine b. guanine c.thymine 2. In DNA, guanine always bonds with ? a. adenine b. cytosine c. thymine 3. The shape of DNA is a double ? a. coil b. helix c. ladder 4. What sugar is found in RNA? a. deoxyribose b. glucose c.ribose In RNA, what takes the place of thymine? a. adenine b. cytosine c. uracil **What cell structure is most responsible for maintaining homeostasis?
