What makes up the universe
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE What makes up the universe Joseph Joachim Ranola and John Arbie Salunat Environmental Science 6
2
What makes up the UNIVERSE?
Something you CAN see Something you CANNOT see Nebulae
3
BARYONIC MATTER Something you CAN see 30-40 yrs. Ago: normal /ordinary matter or stuff that you CAN see” protons, neutrons and electrons The Universe composed of 4.6% atoms normal matter
4
Something you CANNOT see MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE The universe is composed mostly of stuff we can’t see DARK MATTER : Not reacted to light DARK ENERGY : hypothetical form of energy tends to accelerate the expansion of the universe.
5
There Are Five Kinds Of Nebulae
Emmision Nebula Reflection Nebula Dark Nebula Planetary Nebula Supernova Remnant
6
Emmision nebula Cloud of Ionized gas Most common source Protons
7
Reflection Nebula Interstellar dust Doesn’t create light
Not glowing plasmas Light source
8
Dark nebula Nonluminous nebula Dust and Gas Obscures light
Light source
9
Planetary Nebula Created when a star blows
Outer layers of gas expand into space Often the shape of a ring William Herschel Spherical clouds Round like the planets
10
Supernova Nebula Occurs when a high mass star reaches the end of its life Expanding shell of gas Originates from ionized gas
