3
Accomplishments Data Network Largest ATLAS Tier2 site for CERN
Wireless x Dec 2010 and EduRoam Mar 2011 Enterprise VOIP core redesign on Cisco UCCM 8.0 Campus – 4,300 devices complete Med Center – 500 devices complete Employee self-moves (reduced field support) Security- Implemented data center firewall service block (Juniper) Data Center redesign – 10 GbE on Nexus7K core, combo FC/FCoE VRF with Dept of Safety & Security for surveillance cameras. (Originally they wanted parallel network of their own)
4
Challenges Security - Perimeter firewall implementation Telephony
Personnel challenge with Union & VOIP Cell coverage on campus sucks Dorm phones – do we give options for landline vs cell vs VOIP in rooms International support China Center support & India Center planning Streaming lecture capture on campus – Unicast? (New) Data Center running out of space
5
Initiatives Wireless Easier Guest access
Continue N rollout (target 12/12) TEM RFP – carrier contract management, mobile provisioning, invoice auditing, SaaS Energy Efficiency Monitoring – Sustainability one of President’s 5 initiatives but not sexy enough to garner attention. DNS replacement – all Infoblox (from BIND slaves) – June 2011 DNSSEC by Dec 2011
6
Initiatives DAS RFP – replace Mobile Access with vendor neutral, cost neutral SIP Trunk RFP New Hospital Pavillion – 12 story med center building (Jan ‘13). VoIP applications? E911 fully automated Collaborative Apps Strategy – Unified Messaging, Presence, etc AV Strategy – desktop to room based to venue based. Tandberg/Cisco combo HIPAA – data center compliant. Will network be next? Global Dining Card – surprise! – before we’re MPLS
7
UC Roadmap Cisco Contact Center Express 700 Agents
IVR / Speech Recognition Work-at-Home Agents Unity Connection Exchange Unified Messaging Integration Voic Broadcast Mobility and Mobile Apps Softphone / Mobile 8 Single-Number-Reach for Students (piloting Fall, 2011) Presence, Jabber Click-to-dial
8
Data Network Redesign - Current
Spanning Tree Throughout the Network Single Spanning Tree event affects large portions of the network (or all) VLANs extended across Campus Single Link Utilization, even when redundancy present 10 Gbps link limit Full Internet routing tables on Core No demarcation to external networks Long failure recovery times (3 min or greater)
9
Data Network Redesign - Future
Elimination of Spanning Tree problems - Loop-Free Design Full Link Utilization (40 Gbps initially) 100 Gbps Core within 3 years Rapid Failure Recovery (< 200 ms) MPLS on the Core (N7K) and Distribution (still debating N7K or 6500) Create security zones – Residential, Faculty, HIPAA, BAS Enable support for advanced networking research projects ION DYNES GENI / OpenFlow Finally an Edge! Removes edge/border routing from the core devices, protecting core campus network from routing events impacting all campus networks Enable multimedia / collaboration applications control at the edge – Telepresence/WebEx Provide firewall capability at the edge
10
Other ITS Initiatives Building Mediator – pilot project for Cisco’s John Chambers Research Computing/HPC (?) New EMC SAN – VMAX and NS480 ($$) Moving data centers! Enterprise Monitoring RFP - HP, CASpectrum, OPNET Lecture capture New Molecular Engineering Building (2014) – Gig ports? 10 Gb ports? All Fiber? More Virtual Desktops (VDI) Integrated Uchicago card
