Welcome to this presentation, CareerOneStop – Find your Pathway to Career Success CareerOneStop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (ETA). This presentation is intended to provide you with brief information on ETA initiatives and its sponsored electronic tools to assist you and your organization in developing talent and becoming competitive leaders for the 21st century. This presentation is focused on pathways to career success. I will: * Introduce you to the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Mission or (ETA) * Describe WIRED, one of ETA’s foundational principles, for regional economic development and talent development * Provide an overview of CareerOneStop and highlight various online resources * Present other ETA online resources such as Workforce3One, Career Voyages and O*NET and * Answer any questions you may have about CareerOneStop and partner online resources. By the end of this presentation, you will gain valuable knowledge, resources, and conceptual models to enhance your effectiveness as a strategic leader and service provider in your local area. Worker ReEmployment Skills Transferability Talent Development Community-Based Today I’ll be talking about the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (ETA) online tools, initiatives, and strategies to help the leaders of the 21st century. The mission of the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) is to contribute to the more efficient functioning of the U.S. labor market by providing high quality job training, employment, labor market information, and income maintenance services primarily through state and local workforce development systems. Some of ETA pathways to success are programs and initiatives. Some are about models and perspectives in strategic approaches to workforce develoment issues. Bright Outlook Global Competition

CareerOneStop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. Now I’d like to focus on CareerOneStop and other ETA sponsored online tools that supports talent and regional economic development. What is CareerOneStop? CareerOneStop is a set of online tools that integrate economic and workforce development activities and support talent development and prosperity.

Easy-to-use tools and resources right at your fingertips that can help you advance your education and career! CareerOneStop is a national Web site offers that career resources and workforce information to job seekers, students, businesses, and workforce professionals to foster talent development in a global economy. CareerOneStop has been significantly updated over the last couple years. The new look is based on user feedback. It provides easier access to the key tools and resources needed by job seekers, students, businesses, and career professionals. The new organization offers quick and easy access to valuable content. You can find all the CareerOneStop and related tools you need in six simple categories. How many of you are familiar with this website? Polling question. Now I’ll highlight some of CareerOneStop’s unique and easy to use online resources starting with Explore Careers.

10 Explore Careers The Explore Careers section is a great starting place for anyone who isn’t sure their career options or are looking for new paths, such as students or dislocated workers. Information in this section includes information for job seekers looking to advance and manage their careers (Take Charge) and entry-level people and others choosing a new career (Self-Assessments) and data to do research about different occupations and matching skills to occupations. The Skills Profiler, in the Explore Careers section, is a helpful, easy to use tool to help people self-identify their skills and learn about how their skills map to occupations. Also in Explore Careers, you can “Browse Occupations”. You can learn about various occupations to look at: * average wages * required knowledge, skills, abilities, and * required education and training for specific jobs in your state. You can also find related occupations and other web resources on CareerOneStop. These features are especially helpful for people who are looking to change or upgrade their jobs.

12 ‘What’s Hot’ in Jobs? Find jobs in your area with the most openings, highest pay, or fastest growth. Also in Explore Careers, you can find “What’s Hot” in jobs. This allows you to identify what jobs: * are in demand, * have the largest employment, or * are experiencing declining employment.

13 Show Me the Money Find out what industries have the highest paid professionals. Also in Explore Careers, you can find “What’s Hot” in jobs. Here are you identify what jobs are in demand, have the largest employment, or are experiencing declining employment.

14 ‘What’s Hot’ in Industries?
Search different Industries by region and find information on wages, employment trends, and projections. Also in the Explore Careers section you can learn about industries. “What’s Hot” in Industries allows you to search different industries by region. You can find out which industries are: * in demand * have the largest employment * are experiencing declining employment * pay the most, or * have the largest employment over a three-year period.

15 Find Education Options
Check out education and training options in your area that offer programs in your chosen occupation. The Education + Training section has information for people preparing for college, looking for vocational training and professionals looking for continuing education. 3 tools in this section are the Education and Training Finder, Scholarship Finder and Financial Aid Advisor I’ll provide a quick walkthrough of the Education and Training Finder. Under Find, click Colleges & Training * Narrow search by industry, then by occupation title, then by state or region of the country. * The Results page will give you list of schools in that area with programs related to that occupation.

16 Short Term Training Short-term training includes any program where a student can earn a certificate or award in less than two years. These programs can be an ideal way for many laid-off workers, career changers, and job seekers to upgrade their skills and demonstrate their qualifications to a potential employer. CareerOneStop’s new Short-Term Training Finder can help people locate specific training opportunities in their local area, state, or zip code.

17 Find Jobs The Job Search section of CareerOneStop provides some helpful resources. Under “Find Potential Employers”, you can use the Employer Locator to find contact information about a specific employer or list of employers by industry, occupation or location. Under “State Job Banks”, you can find connect to state job banks. Job seekers can post their resumes, view or apply for job openings, or visit private-sector or government and veterans job banks. 18 Find a OneStop “People + Places to Help” provides you with access to various national and state employment and training programs such as Business Development, Veterans, and Unemployment Insurance. You can also find a OneStop Career Center, local libraries, community colleges, and more. Please go to CareerOneStop’s other categories such as “Salary + Benefits” and “Resumes + Interviews for other helpful resources and online tools. In partnership with other U.S. Department of Labor programs, CareerOneStop also deploys other Web sites. I’ll focus on 2 of these now.

19 Green Jobs There’s a lot of buzz about Green Jobs. But job seekers, students, and even workforce professionals can find it difficult to define exactly what a green job is, what skills are needed, and what kind of training is available. In 2009, O*NET investigated the impact of green economic activities on occupations and job duties, and identified a list of 200+ green occupations. Explore these findings in CareerOneStop’s new Green Careers section (

21 What Employers Want The Competency Model provides the business community with a means to communicate its skill needs to educators and the workforce system in a common industry-driven framework. In their simplest form, Competency Models are a clear description of what a person needs to know and be able to do to perform well in a specific job: Knowledge Skills Abilities Competency models can also describe the requirements for: Work roles Groups of jobs/job families Entire organizations/businesses Industry sectors broad and specific Features: Easy online building tool Quickly identify high-demand skills High-growth Industry Models (Financial, Retail, & Advanced Links to education models Success stories Benefits: Disseminate the information Eliminate redundancies Develop consistencies Build framework for standards, curriculum and certifications Assist in decision making

22 Regional Economic Development
CareerOneStop’s Regional Economic Development Web site offers free and reliable labor market, economic, and workforce data and information in one convenient location. Economic developers, workforce developers, and business and education leaders can select information unique to their region and compare it with other areas. Also, there is information about WIRED and the Six Steps to Regional Success. These models integrate economic and workforce development activities and demonstrate how talent development can drive economic transformation in regional economies across the United States. Also, CareerOneStop can partner with you or other organization to deploy content and tools that are unique to you.

23 Web Services * Does displaying CareerOneStop’s range of career, education, and employment data on your own site sound interesting? * Would you be interested in a customized version of a Web-based salary tool or occupation profile? * How about a searchable database of occupational licenses or certifications? * What if you could add these features to your career information web site so that it looks like your web site and costs your nothing to do so? If so, you may be a candidate for Web services. CareerOneStop now offers Web services as a way to exchange data, information, and even online tools seamlessly between Web sites.
