How Does Hive Work? The Hive Client Video Source Helper Services
The key component to Hive Streaming is the Hive Client, installed on each endpoint. We like to refer to it as a “polite” or “invisible” Client – it runs as a background service, consuming at most 3% CPU while streaming and much less while idle. The Hive Client acts as an HTTP proxy between the Skype Meeting Broadcast video source and the video player. The player is re-directed to the Hive Client, which listens on a localhost address. The Hive Client then determines the best path to the content by measuring throughput to the video source. The first Clients to join an event will pull the video fragments from the source. Subsequent Clients will pull the video from “nearby” Clients on the same subnet or in the same Site. Part of Hive Streaming is a series of web services hosted in Azure called the Hive “Helper” Services. These are HTTP-based web services used for command & control of the Hive Clients and collecting, crunching and presenting statistics about the event. Hive never relays video fragments through these services, that’s a big security no-no for us. 9/17/2018 © 2017 Hive Streaming
