1 Horton and the Magical Egg
Based on “Horton Hatches The Egg” by Dr. Seuss By: Dan Shek & Isaac Park

2 One day, there was an elephant named Horton who always wandered around
One day, there was an elephant named Horton who always wandered around. After a long stroll, he sat on a rock and to his amazement, look what he found.

3 He discovered a special egg that was colorful and bright
He discovered a special egg that was colorful and bright. The egg glowed and could shimmer in the night.

4 Horton thought to himself, “Well, no one to keep it warm, but I shall be helpful and wait.”
So the young elephant decided to sit on it, but suddenly exclaimed, ”Oh, it just might break!” Oh, it just might break!

5 The beautiful egg, suddenly, started to grow bigger and bigger.
As Horton waited for the special egg to hatch, something magical began to happen. The beautiful egg, suddenly, started to grow bigger and bigger. Egg’s Growth!!!

6 The egg grew until it could grow no more.
Abruptly, the growth came to a halt and the curious Horton waited for what was in store.

7 Horton observed the egg carefully, not knowing what to do.
Magically, it doubled and one became two.

8 The eggs remained silent and then, boom. Two had multiplied into four
The eggs remained silent and then, boom! Two had multiplied into four. The young elephant gasped and was shocked. Excited, Horton waited for more.

9 But, that was the end of the mysterious magic and it left Horton a bit puzzled In no time at all, the eggs hatched. And out came four chicks, without a single scratch.

10 Looking closely, Horton saw that the four chicks were different and unique. But, they all shared a similar feature amongst each other, which was their pink beak.

11 In the end, Horton still couldn’t understand what caused the eggs to multiply and hatch. But little did he know that the magical trick was all done by meiosis, which was the catch.

12 How this all relates to Meiosis I
While Horton was waiting, the egg begins to grow, which represents the growth process and the development stages that the cell has to take before going through meiosis. When the cell is able to go through meiosis, it meets these stages: Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telephase I, and finally Cytokinesis. (This is what allowed the egg to duplicate in the story.)

13 How this all relates to Meiosis II
After the egg duplicates into two, it stands still again. This represents Interkinesis, which is the start of Meiosis II. The egg, later, goes through Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II, and Cytokinesis. These stages allow the two eggs to multiply again, which finally results in total, four eggs. After the eggs were hatched, each chick was found to be different. This is because, in meiosis, each cell that is produced is different from the original copy.
