Topic: How are mass, weight and volume different? Learning Target: I can distinguish between mass, weight and volume.

Unit for measuring this quantity; are also metric units Black: Metric unit Red: English Unit mass Kilogram* gram weight Newton* pounds (lbs) Ounces (oz.) volume Liters (L)* Cubic centimeters (cm3) Cubic meters (m3) Milliliters (mL) Gallons (gal) If you weren’t in Science, you might measure this in pounds or ounces. In science, we use the metric unit for weight (a force). The English unit for weight is a pound or ounce.

4 Mass The amount of matter in an object; it is a property of the object. Mass is independent of location. We use a triple beam balance to mass an object.

5 Weight The force that pulls mass toward Earth*.
* Moons and planets and stars have gravitational fields that create the force that we call ‘weight’, so EARTH in the statement above could be the moon, Mars, the Sun, Jupiter The force that pulls mass toward Earth*. Weight is dependent upon the gravitational field. We use a scale to weigh objects.

6 Volume The amount of space occupied by an object. We determine Volume
An object’s size in 3 dimensions. We determine Volume By Water displacement By geometry By algebraic (fractional) analysis.

7 Debriefing Mass, Volume and Weight are DIFFERENT dimensional characteristics of a sample.

9 Homework? Find a line graph (any kind) and bring a copy to school next time.
