During the last 18 months – the whole Co-op has been on a journey of change and discovery.
We’ve brushed up our image with a bold modern-take on a trusted brand from the past. We’ve re-launched our membership linking us in a tangible way to our communities. We up-skilled 5000 leaders and had conversations with 55 thousand colleagues through Back to Being Co-op. Colleagues are embracing and bringing to life our Ways of Being Co-op and in fact, ‘Being Co-op’ has already become part of our language. In 2017 we’re going to build on these foundations for our new Co-op and of course, colleagues are at the centre of our plans. So we’re introducing Thank You for Being Co-op.
3
We know that happy colleagues are motivated to help make customers happy – this helps turn customers into members, which will deliver benefits to the business as a whole. For the Co-op – great engagement translates to benefit the bottom line - in the south food division there was a 5% uplift in sales after the BCOP events. There is plenty of evidence that engagement works and that colleagues who feel recognised for their efforts and achievements, will deliver great results for our business. Recognition is not just about the bottom line – it’s about recognising the great work our colleagues do every day.
4
Thank you for Being Co-op has been created in collaboration with colleagues.
We gathered 1,000 pieces of individual insight from across our businesses. Used feedback from the Talkback Survey. Asked our new Colleague Voice representatives what they think. Analysed our data from Simply Thankyou – our existing recognition website. This insight has played a big part in shaping how and why we say celebrate success with Thank You for Being Co-op. * Colleague Voice are our new pan-Group engagement forum - where colleagues from all grades and business areas give feedback on Co-op projects and ideas.

So what is Thank You for Being Co-op?
Thank You for Being Co-op is split into two parts – Everyday Thank You and Uniquely Co-op. Everyday Thank You will make sure you can recognise the efforts colleagues make every day in delivering our purpose. Uniquely Co-op is about recognising colleagues who go above and beyond in a Uniquely Co-op way. And how are we going to do this? By building a culture of recognition through engaging campaigns and communications. Let’s learn a little more…
6
First of all Everyday Thank you…
We’re going to encourage colleague to colleague recognition – colleagues don’t have to wait for a manager to recognise great effort. So we’re creating a ‘basket’ of recognition which will include – Thank You Cards, Badges, Posters and even a selfie frame!
7
There’s also an easier way for managers to order Co-op vouchers to say thank you to colleagues ….so no expensive recognition websites required!
8
And you can also say thank you digitally on the Thank You for Being Co-op pages on the colleague internet site.
9
But first we’re going to test this approach out with a pilot for the recognition baskets.
The pilot starts at the beginning of July. Wer’e piloting in 150 food stores, Avonmouth Logistics Depo and the HR teams in Angel Square. This gives us an opportunity to see what works well and what doesn’t, before we roll out across the county and in all business areas – so watch this space!
10
Now a little more about Uniquely Co-op.
It’s a quarterly campaign to recognise colleagues who go ‘Above & Beyond’. Nomination forms will be available online and in hardcopy. Once the nominations are received – the Colleague Voice team will choose a shortlist of colleagues and teams with stand-out stories. Successfully nominated colleagues and teams will receive badge and certificate. With the overall winners receiving a special recognition moment at the AGM.
11
The criteria will be based around our four Ways of Being Co-op.
And the prizes will be Uniquely Co-op experiences – related to our purpose. Perhaps a visit to a local food supplier like a brewery or time with the Fairtrade team. There will be a list of lots of different opportunities colleagues can choose from.
12
So how are we going to do this?
Well, it’s all about building a culture of recognition. We’ve engaged senior managers with this approach. Delivered coaching workshops for operational leaders & trainers – over 350 and counting. We’ll share and publicise the great recognition work already taking place. As well as providing access to useful information and guidance.
13
Great communications will also play a big part.
We’ll create campaigns around specific moments (like the nomination window for Uniquely Co-op). Share stories of best practice and make them visible. Provide resources for everyone to use. Work with our Digital & Comms teams for the best outcomes.
14
To get this show on the road we need your help!
15
Let’s celebrate what works and learn from the best.
And let’s do it the Co-op Way.
