Differentiating Instruction to Include All Students By: Kelly M. Anderson Presented By: Taylor Mathy Anderson, K. (n.d.). Differentiating instruction to include all students. Tips For Teaching, 51(3),

2 What Is Differentiated Instruction?
Stems from beliefs about differences among learners, how students learn, differences in learning preferences, and individual interests Implies that the purpose of schools should be to maximize the capabilities of ALL students

3 Examples of Differentiation
Teachers who differentiate believe that every child is unique with different learning styles and preferences Examples of Differentiation Using different topics of interest-geography, music, foods, wildlife Provide varied work spaces-quiet work spaces, work space with tables instead of desks ….basically the instruction should be moving all students towards proficiency

4 Critical Elements of Differentiated Instruction
Incorporate choice, flexibility, on-going assessment, and creativity Provide different processing opportunities and different ways in which students can demonstrate what they have learned *At beginning of lesson planning, know what each child should be able to do at end of lesson/unit*

5 Where to start? Before school year:
-Create learning profiles containing learning preferences, family structure, favorite hobbies, etc. -Include previous grade-level information like state assessment scores, lexile readings and fluency recording Once year beings: -Introduce instruction by modifying the process of a few lessons *Example: Create a choice board where students can select activities that you have carefully constructed based on the student’s knowledge and readiness

6 Conclusion… In differentiated classrooms, students are engaged and participating in their own learning Differentiated thinking empowers teachers to be responsive Many K-12 teachers think that differentiated instruction can meet all children’s need while also adhering to standards and state performance testing…what do you think?

7 I-Clicker Questions Using the same workbook everyday for all the students is a form differentiated instruction.
