-Criterion referenced scales based on typical child development of speech, language, and listening skills -Developed by Sunshine Cottage in San Antonio for use with Deaf and hard of hearing students -Five color-coded scales: Pre-Verbal, Pre-Sentence, Simple Sentence, Complex Sentence, and Speech -Tracks behaviors typically seen from 0 months to 8 years of age

5 scales were overwhelming when presented to parents or district representatives Percentages can be hard to interpret or “visualize” Understanding the extent of a student’s language delay was difficult when viewing the full set of scales Developing lesson plans, teacher improvement goals and CASLLS targets for a group or class was overwhelming There was a need for an “at a glance” explanation for the CASLLS during conferences, ARDs, and other meetings
