Called Saints That Belong To Christ
R o m a n s 1 : 6 - 7

“including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:6-7

“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” Romans 8:29-30

The Question R o m a n s 1 : 6 - 7 There can be no doubt that some topics in the Bible are more difficult than others. The Hebrew writer said as much in his letter to the Hebrew brethren. (SLIDE)

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:12-14 Peter even explained that some of what Paul wrote was “difficult” to understand. (SLIDE)

“And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.” 2 Peter 3:15-16 Notice, it wasn’t impossible to understand but rather difficult for those that ignorant or not knowledgeable concerning the more “solid food” aspects of God’s Word. (SLIDE) When one finds a “difficult passage” or “topic” proper hermeneutics dictates that we test our thoughts and findings against simpler or less difficult topics that are associated with our subject. That brings me back to…(SLIDE)

The Question R o m a n s 1 : 6 - 7 A simple question we can ask that will help with this discussion is this, “does man have free will or not?” If man does not have free will than God picks and choose who is saved and no one has a say in it. If man does have free will then God allows man to choose whether or not he wants to be saved. As always we must remember that God is the author of His Word (2 Timothy 3:16) and as such He will not contradict Himself (1 Corinthians 15:33). So let us answer this question “does man have free will or not?” by examining clear or simple passages on the subject. (SLIDE)

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Does God have the power to save? Of course there are those that are “saved” and as such God has the power to save people (Romans 1:16) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation…” Does God want all people to be saved? According to 2 Peter 3:9 and 1 Timothy 2:3-4 the answer is yes. If God has the power to save and He desires or wants everyone to be saved and it is God alone, not man’s free will, that saves then we should find in God saying that all people will be saved. However when we go the perfect and holy Word of God we find there will be those that are lost and not saved (Matthew 25:32-33, 41). (SLIDE)

“Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left…41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’” Matthew 25:32-33, 41 We even find that there will be more lost than saved. (SLIDE)

“Enter by the narrow gate
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:13-14 If God is able to save, and He wants everyone to be saved and man has no free will or say in the matter than we shouldn’t find verses like we have here. One can’t argue the lost are needed to fulfil the will of God for God’s will is that everyone be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4). (SLIDE)

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3-4 When God talks about predestination and those that are called or elected He is talking about those “in Christ” or those that have “obeyed the gospel.” Ephesians 1:3-14 demonstrates this wonderfully. Notice…(SLIDE)

Who Is Predestined Then?
R o m a n s 1 : 6 - 7 When God talks about predestination and those that are called or elected He is talking about those “in Christ” not those “outside of Christ” needing in. Ephesians 1:3-14 demonstrates this wonderfully. Notice…(SLIDE)

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing. For he chose us before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons, in accordance with his pleasure and will… Ephesians 4:3-13 Notice how this passage lines up very well with the doctrine of “unconditional election” or God saving i.e. electing people to salvation unconditionally.

…to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us
…to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us. We have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding… Ephesians 4:3-13

…And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. We were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will… Ephesians 4:3-13

…in order that we, who were the first to hope, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit” Ephesians 4:3-13 Now for those that didn’t notice, I took out several words in this passage. By taking out those words this passage clearly is talking about “unconditional election” or those “outside of Christ” that God brings into Christ. However when you add the words back in you see something else being discussed all together. (SLIDE)

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will… Ephesians 4:3-13

…to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding… Ephesians 4:3-13

…And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will… Ephesians 4:3-13

…in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit” Ephesians 4:3-13 Paul, by no means, is trying to just be wordy. He wanted us to know something special about the plan of salvation. He wanted us to know that those that are saved are “in Christ.” In other words the predestination Paul is talking about is talking about all those “in Christ” rather than all those “out of Christ.” (SLIDE)

R o m a n s 1 : 6 - 7 Brothers and sisters the topic of predestination is not the “basic principles of the oracles of God” but there are simple passages that let us understand what Paul i.e. God is talking about when He talks about predestination. God, before the foundation of the world/age, called all those “in Christ.” In other words He created an avenue or plan by which all people can enter into Christ. What a wondrous hope God had given all people everywhere!!! This hope is for all and not limited to some for “God desires everyone to be saved.”

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” Romans 6:3-5
