1 Climate change mitigation and adaptation actions in Vietnam

2 Existing environmental issues in Vietnam
Due to climate change Water Situation Water resources Dense river networks Red river delta in the North: high slope of bed river. Central: short rivers, high gradient Mekong delta in the South: low flat area, low gradient rivers Storms Linda 1997, Durian 2006, Hayan 2013, Rammasun 2014 Extreme floods and inundation Red river delta: 1971, 2008 Central: 1999, 2007, 2012 Mekong delta: 2000, 2011 Impact of sea, tidal Salinity intrusion 2005, 2016 Dyke attacks Salt intrusion 2015 and 2016 Red river delta The Mekong river is one of the longest rivers in the world with total length of 4.2 thousand km and the basin of nearly 800 square kilometers. The Mekong delta is the end of Mekong river after flowing through 6 countries, it has 13 provinces and is the most important region for producing aquaculture and agricultures of Vietnam. However this is a very low flat region, mostly from 0.5 to 1.5 meter. Mekong delta (Source: Vietnam, Tan Phan, 2011) (Source: Nestmann, 2016) Prof. Dr. Max Mustermann | Name of Faculty

3 1. Mitigation and Adaptation actions
Flood and inundation Water Situation 1. Ho Chi Minh City flood control project Total investment of US$650 million 3 pump stations (ca m3/h) and drainage and dyke works The Mekong river is one of the longest rivers in the world with total length of 4.2 thousand km and the basin of nearly 800 square kilometers. The Mekong delta is the end of Mekong river after flowing through 6 countries, it has 13 provinces and is the most important region for producing aquaculture and agricultures of Vietnam. However this is a very low flat region, mostly from 0.5 to 1.5 meter. (Source: Huyen, 2016) 2. Fresh water storage and groundwater recharge US$41.8 million for 3 reservoirs to prevent flooding (Source: Meinhardt Group, 2017) Prof. Dr. Max Mustermann | Name of Faculty

4 2. Mitigation and Adaptation actions
Impact of sea and tidal Water Situation Melaleuca fences Rehabilitation of coastal area successful The Mekong river is one of the longest rivers in the world with total length of 4.2 thousand km and the basin of nearly 800 square kilometers. The Mekong delta is the end of Mekong river after flowing through 6 countries, it has 13 provinces and is the most important region for producing aquaculture and agricultures of Vietnam. 12 Conclusions 谢谢! Thank you!
Environmental issues due to climate change and pollution IT‘S LATE ALREADY: Solutions are urgently needed! Technology adaption to local boundary conditions Interdisciplinary approach (water sector, research & industry) Potentials of Taiwanese - Vietnamese academic cooperation for future challenges! 谢谢! Thank you! ________________________ Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phong Department Environmental Engineering Hoa Sen University
