Viet Cong Unfamiliar terrain & enemy has intricate network of tunnels Enemy is more motivated Unpopular war at home Cultural differences Use of helicopters to mobilize troops Napalm – gel that ignites to burn down thick vegetation “Agent Orange” – pesticide Air assault – “Operation Rolling Thunder” Increase number of troops (draft)

THE KOREAN WAR The Korean War occurred prior to the Vietnam War ( ). Again, the NORTH was Communist (supported by China & the USSR) Again, the SOUTH was free, democratic (supported by the U.S.)

THE KOREAN WAR The Korean War ended in a cease-fire or armistice.
A demilitarized zone separates North Korea from South Korea today (38th parallel). It was not unified like Vietnam. The U.N. has a constant presence to help maintain peace, as well as soldiers from both countries.
