1 Young People and the Nazi Regime
By Laurence G. Bisdee

2 The Nazis really wanted to win the hearts of the young.
They knew that some adults would always reject their ideas. If they indoctrinated children from a young age, the ideals would stick with them for life. This was why the Hitler Youth (Hitler Jugend) was created.

3 They were organised similar to scouts
Boys aged between 6 and 10 joined the Little Fellows; the from 10 to 14 they went onto the Young Folk and then finally from 14 to 18 they became members of the Hitler Youth. Girls joined the Young girls between 10 and 14 and from 14 to 17 they joined the League of German Maidens. The youth organisations were perfect to convince the young.. They were even told to report their parents if they did wrong The real purpose of the organisations were to prepare the children so that they may join the army. Girls weren't allowed to join the army but were encouraged to have lots of children instead.

4 Membership was not compulsory at first. But people liked the idea of it.
In million people had joined. And there was almost no competition from rival youth groups.

5 The Nazis also used schools to indoctrinate the young.
They completely took over the education. Subjects like History and Biology were considered most important. More and more subjects were taught that boosted the Nazi beliefs. There were even questions in Maths books that were to do with the war effort.

6 Only Nazi supporting teachers were allowed to teach.
Almost all of them were made to join the National Socialist Teachers’ League All the examples in class exercises further encourage support for the Nazis. For example Maths, Physics and Geography.

7 All activities were marked in a performance book.
Boys with the highest marks were sent to special schools to become leaders of the future. In these schools they were taken from the age of 12 and given six years hard training. At some of them, students were woken up in the middle of the night (in winter) to do open air PT exercises. Their training was extreme however at the end of it they were considered to be Hitler’s idea of what the youth should be.
