1 INSPIRE Data Specification Protected Sites

2 Introduction Thematic Working Group members from UK, Germany and EEA.
Strongly influenced by the need for Natura2000 reporting. Driven by use cases to cover experts and non-experts, local, national and Europe-wide.

3 Definition Area designated or managed within a framework of international, Community and Member States' legislation to achieve specific conservation objectives [Directive 2007/2/EC].

4 Overview A range of legislation and policies regulate Protected Sites:
Habitats Directive Birds Directive World Heritage Convention... Legal entities with defined boundary and location and date of creation.

5 Requirements No jurisdictional boundary crossing.
Polygons (simple or complex). No topology. Absolute, not relative boundaries. Varying spatial resolution.

6 Profiles There are a number of different priorities for Protected Sites. Needed to meet reporting requirements, but minimise burden on Member States. Three profiles: Simple Full Natura2000

12 Conclusions There’s a simple path.
There’s a path for Natura2000 compliance. Covers a range of use cases for different users and different scales.
