Area designated or managed within a framework of international, Community and Member States' legislation to achieve specific conservation objectives [Directive 2007/2/EC].

4. Overview A range of legislation and policies regulate Protected Sites:
Habitats Directive
Birds Directive
World Heritage Convention...
Legal entities with defined boundary and location and date of creation.

5. Requirements No jurisdictional boundary crossing.
Polygons (simple or complex).
No topology.
Absolute, not relative boundaries.
Varying spatial resolution.

6. Profiles
There are a number of different priorities for Protected Sites.
Needed to meet reporting requirements, but minimise burden on Member States.
