2 Class Organisation Groups Group jobs/ responsibilities
Equipment /materials The children are seated in mixed ability, social groups and are often moved from group to group in order to get to know each other. Within each group, every child has a job/ responsibility which changes on a weekly basis. For instance, one week they might be the resource collector and the next be the cloakroom inspector and so on. These jobs encourage the children to take more responsibility within the classroom and to exemplify the important role they have in the classroom layout and routine. In addition, to enhance the children’s learning and their ability to reach their fullest potential, the classroom has various resources that assist and support many learning activities we do in class. ed maximum All children are introduced to the same activities. Equipment and materials are clearly labelled and accessible to the children in order to promote independence. Children are introduced to what they will learn each day. This is written on the Learning Intentions board.

Expressive Arts This Is Our Faith Health and Wellbeing Now with the full implementation of the CfE, some subject names have changed due to their new content approaches and resources that are used. This Is Our Faith replaces the old Alive-O! programme and provides an imaginative programme of work and topics, enabling all children to gain a deeper understanding of their religion in a more fruitful, advanced and stimulating way.

4 Literacy Storyworld - Primary 1 – stages 1-3 (App.) Phonics
Handwriting BIG Writing Talking and Listening Common Words Reading – The main reading resource is Heinemann ‘Storyworlds’. There are four worlds in each stage, all with the same basic vocabulary set in context. The children are introduced to characters and basic sight vocabulary via big book stories, which the children share in reading with the teacher. When you are reading with your child, encourage your child to point to the words as they read and discuss the pictures to retell the story in his/her own words. If you find your child struggling with the book, listen to them as you read it along side them. As your child gains more confidence, he/she should indicate when they are able to read the story themselves. As soon as they get ‘stuck’ at a word again, do not hesitate to begin to read along side them again until their indicate to stop. This type of shared reading will boost your child’s confidence yet enables you to see the words or sounds that your child struggles with. In class, to enhance their literacy skills, the children often use materials such as magnetic letters, dry wipe boards, tracing cards, copy cards, worksheets and workbooks are also used. As each new level is taught, more vocabulary is introduced, and the format of the reading books changes. Primary 2, it is important for the children to have as many opportunities as possible to write. Children will experience various types of writing on their ‘Big Writing Day.’ They will be encouraged to cover the criteria required for A Curriculum for Excellence. This criteria will include capital letters, full stops and the correct use of joining words. VCOP. Initially, the children have been revising ‘cvc’ words in phonics. The children have been actively changing the middle sound or ending sound using magnetic letters and whiteboards. Next term they will begin with consonant blends. ‘pr, fr, cr’.

As a specialist in expressive arts, I like to encourage the children to express themselves and their learning through art, pe, drama and music. Participating in these subjects enhances the classes confidence, self esteem, attitude towards learning and numerous skills- socially, artistically, physically and so on. We are fortune enough in the school to have Mrs Clements who takes the class on Friday mornings for P.E.

9 Health and Wellbeing Personal and Social Development Health Education
Circle Time Golden Time Health Education P.E – Monday and Friday Personal and social development plays a critical role in the development of your child, particularly at a young age. The transition from primary 1 to primary 2 is a big jump and if the children develop the personal and social skills they need throughout life at a young age, they will find their learning journey throughout school much more enjoyable and benefitical. During circle time, the children are encourage to reflect upon and discuss situations that Golden time takes place on a Friday afternoon and is a chance for the children to interact with each other in a social and fun environment within the classroom. During this time, they children are able to play with a toy they bring in from home, however, please do not allow any intendo DS’s or electronic devices alike because the children are able to access inappropriate games and images on them.

Please ensure reading books come into school daily. Label everything. Sand shoes will come home at times throughout the year. If any letters or books have to go home, I ask the children to put them inside their book bags. The children should bring in their book bag everyday and you should check to see if there are any letters or books inside on a daily basis. Losing Golden Time: At this point the child will lose 5 minutes of Golden Time. Upper school this increases to 10 mins.

18 Our ambition is for all children and young people in Glasgow to know their rights and have the freedom in our establishments to enjoy these rights. To achieve this we need all adults to support children and young people in knowing their rights and working together to ensure these rights are protected.
