Engineering 1182.01 Preliminary Testing of Design
Prepared By: Omer Masud, Sam Dastidar First Year Engineering Program College Of Engineering Ohio State University Winter 2003 As the roller coaster project material is not finalized the project specifications and description cant be developed. The students will be introduced to the requirements, constraints and specifications of the quarter long design project. In the second half of the first lab session the student teams will be introduced to simple physics concepts such as velocity and acceleration. The teams will be introduced to Newton’s First Law of Motion (N1). The students will be assigned a pre-lab reading, which would involve physics concepts that will be useful in the roller coaster design in later labs. Assumptions: The 183 student have already been introduced to concepts of Newtonian physics in high school. Concepts such as force, kinetic energy, potential energy, velocity, acceleration, conservation of energy and laws of motion will be revisited briefly in the pre-lab assignment. Students are also expected to be comfortable using Excel to solve equations and plot graphs of data. A brief review can also be added to the pre-lab material if needed. Overview of Labs Lab 1 Introduction to Roller Coaster Design Lab 2
Roller Coaster Energy Losses Lab 3 Roller Coaster Circuits with Circuit Prototyping Lab 4 Roller Coaster Speed Sensor Calibration Lab 5 RC Building Session #1 Lab 6 RC Building Session #2 Lab 7 RC Building Session #3 Lab 8 RC Final Construction - Preliminary Testing of Design Lab 9 RC Final Testing of Design Lab 10 RC Oral Presentations This slide should provide the student with a overall view of how the labs help in completing the project. The students should have an understanding of where these concepts will be used in future labs and in their project design and implementation. Lab 7: Building Session #2

Today’s Activites Timed 30-minute build period.
Make sure you complete all testing today (including speed sensors) in preparation for next week’s final test. Confirm your coaster’s feature content today.
4
Optional Final Testing
If you would like to perform your final test today, instead of next week, let your GTA know immediately.
