5 when was it? April 6, 1971 when the American Ping-Pong team, in Japan for the 31st World Table Tennis Championship, received a surprise invitation from their Chinese colleagues for an all-expense paid visit to the People's Republic.

6 what is it? The exchange of table tennis players between the United States and China The event marked a thaw in Sino-American relations that paved the way to a visit to Beijing by President Richard Nixon.

8 How did it happen? Soon after the U.S. team's trip, Nixon, not wanting to lose momentum, secretly sent Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to Peking to arrange a Presidential visit to China.This was the start of the US-China relationship improvement.

9 the steps it took April 1971-The U.S. Table Tennis team was in Nagoya, Japan in 1971 for the 31st world table tennis championship on April 6 when they received an invitation to visit China. July July 9-11, Kissinger, Nixon's National Security Advisor, flew to Beijing from Pakistan. His meetings there produced an agreement that President Nixon would visit China. UN membership – 1971 Nixon supports giving PRC China’s seat on the Security Council and UN membership Taiwan – US would no longer oppose PRC but will not give up Taiwan Japan – 1978 – Treaty of friendship signed and second most important trading partner
