1 DCPS workshop February 6

2 Please take a seat and enjoy some breakfast.
WELCOME! Please take a seat and enjoy some breakfast. Feel free to page through the materials in your packet. If you use social media today, please incorporate #energizingSTEM Complete your pre-test, filling in all bubbles completely. Location: Pepco

3 What to expect for today:
We will participate in hands-on activities. We will collaborate in small and large groups. We will have discussions and ask and answer questions at appropriate times and in a productive manner. We will get outta here on time! 

4 Steve Solomon, Exelon Foundation Debbi Jarvis, Pepco
WELCOME Steve Solomon, Exelon Foundation Debbi Jarvis, Pepco Mary Spruill, The NEED Project Let’s play Bingo!

5 TEACHER DEMO BEFORE AFTER CHANGE

6 Nuclear Energy Chemical Energy Potential Energy Elastic Energy
Energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules Nuclear Energy Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom – the energy that holds the nucleus together Potential Energy Stored energy and the energy of position Gravitational Energy Energy of place or position Elastic Energy Energy stored in objects by the application of force.

7 Kinetic Energy Radiant Energy Thermal Energy Sound Energy
Electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves Thermal Energy Internal energy in substances – vibration or movement of atoms and molecules in substances a.k.a. “heat” Kinetic Energy Motion of waves, electrons, atoms, molecules, and substances Sound Energy Movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves Electrical Energy Movement of electrons Motion Movement of substance from one place to another

8

9 Energy Cards (Elementary SOE)
Cut the cards apart; clip them together Students can use these to help show or work out energy transformations

10

11 Transition: Forms to Sources
Forms - How Scientists Classify Energy Sources - Where We Get the Energy To Make Our Lives More Comfortable, Convenient, & Enjoyable

12 What Makes Wind

13 U.S. Wind Resource Map

14 Large Wind Turbines Common Utility-Scale Turbines 328’ base to blade
Each blade is 112’ 200 tons total Foundation 20’ deep Rated at megawatts Supply about 500 homes

15 How a Wind Turbine Operates

16 Energy from the Wind – What a breeze!
Build an Anemometer Measure wind speed. Compare your model to an actual wind measurement tool. Blade Investigations Build your turbine tower and test variables of blade construction. Devise a design for optimal blades.

21 Energy of Moving Water– A “dam” good time!
Volume and the Force of Water Explore how volume and force of water are related. Compare and relate the model to a dam. Turbine Investigation Build a hydropower generator. Devise a design for optimal electrical output. Build an Anemometer Explore a basic water wheel

22 Energy Savers Conservation Contract The Energy I Used Today
Students start a conservation conversation at home. Energy Tools Monitoring and Mentoring Students can measure energy consumption in the building like an energy auditor. The Energy I Used Today Saving Energy at Home and School Students get a basic understanding of energy consumption in their day. Conservella Energy on Stage Students perform a play that highlights energy conservation.

23 Educational Energy Audit
NEED's Certified Energy Manager (CEM) will come visit your school for half a day The CEM will work with a group of students Do a walk through of the building Make notes about possible improvements Register through Wizehive

24 STEM Project Hands-on project that gets your kids thinking about energy. Brainstorm ideas at the workshop

25 Energy Fair Host an Energy Fair for your community
Students run the fair and teach the community about energy Show off your STEM projects! Host and Energy Carnival (materials provided) Teach families about residential energy use Let us know your fair date through Wizehive

26 Presentation & Video Project Submission
Create a PDF presentation and/or a video of the activities, STEM Challenge, and Energy Fair. Upload your project to Wizehive by June 1, 2017

27 Timeline February 28 - All materials received from NEED
Kit shipment will be based on selections made at the February training. Materials should be opened, verified, and any questions should be directed to Emily at NEED, March 1 - Submit confirmation of receipt of curriculum materials and kits to NEED March Educational Energy Audits should be scheduled March 27 – Energy Fair should be scheduled March/April – mid-program refresh workshop June 1 – projects due & evaluations due
