Combined, these elements help an athlete perform better, day in and day out. One of the keys to improved athletic performance is to conserve the “fuel” that your body has on reserve. The “fuel” that athletes use is called glycogen. Think of glycogen levels like the gas in a car: once we run out of it, we’re literally out of gas. However, imagine a car that, as the tank gets lower, slows down. That’s how your body works. So, the bigger the gas tank, the longer and the better you can perform. Once we finish working out, we must replenish the lost glycogen, a process that typically takes hours. By consuming carbohydrates during exercise, our body is able to use the ingested carbohydrate as fuel, instead of precious glycogen. So, saving glycogen can dramatically shorten refueling time, thus speeding recovery. Even though you could finish an event or workout without eating, you’ll be digging your body into greater glycogen debt. Carbohydrates enter cells through channels called transporters. The transporter that takes up glucose (the building blocks of maltodextrin), can only accommodate so much at a time. Consumption of maltodextrin beyond this maximum isn’t utilized, and can even cause problems like gastric distress. Think of the glucose transporter like a freeway and glucose like cars. Once there are too many cars for the freeway to support, a jam occurs and traffic backs up. The excess cars have nowhere to go. This is what overloading the glucose transporter is like. However, our bodies have a second transporter that is specific for fructose. Think of this as the break-down lane on a freeway – while fewer cars can travel on this during rush hour, and must proceed at a lower speed – it still allows for more cars that can get through than if this lane wasn’t used. This is how glucose and fructose work together to supply your body more carbohydrate. Carbohydrate utilization Glucose Maltodextrin Glucose is the 91-octane of energy for cells. However, like a gas tank, we can only take in so much. Prolong is unique because it uses maltodextrin, which is a long-chain of glucose molecules. To demonstrate why maltodextrin is a great fuel source, let’s consider a hypothetical situation. A single cell may only be able to hold 10 units of a carbohydrate. These could be 10 single units of glucose, or 10 units of maltodextrin, each of which is comprised of many units of glucose. So for each of the 10 units of maltodextrin, we are actually getting many units of glucose. Inside the cell, maltodextrin is broken down into glucose units very rapidly. By using maltodextrin, we are able to deliver a much greater number of glucose molecules to working muscles.
