1 CN: Functions of Cells

2 When we compare plant and animal cells…
Plant cells have 2 structures that animal cells do not: cell wall, which gives them a boxy shape chloroplasts, which allow them to capture sunlight energy.

3 When we compare plant and animal cells…
Plant cells also have a LARGE CENTRAL VACUOLE, ‘ and animal cells have a small VACUOLE.

4 Are all cells exactly the same?
No! There is a tremendous amount of variety in cells. Their structure reflects their function! However…

5 Even though there is tremendous diversity among cells, every cell has:
1. DNA 2. a cell membrane 3. same basic organelles 4. Uses energy the same way! 5. Makes proteins the same way!

6 Eukaryotic/Eukaryote
Cells with a nucleus

7 Prokaryotic Cells/Prokaryotes
Cells without a nucleus (DNA floats in cytoplasm/ ex. Bacteria)

9 Thinking caps & capes on!
Super thinker Quiz! Thinking caps & capes on!

10 Review! In eukaryotic cells, which organelle contains the cell’s DNA?
Nucleus Golgi complex Smooth ER Vacuole

11 Which of the following statements is part of the cell theory?
All cells suddenly appear by themselves All cells come from other cells. All organisms are multicellular All cells have identical parts.
