3 Geography Korea is a peninsula
Surrounded by water, with mountains to the north “the hermit kingdom” – isolation continued in North Korea Peoples from North China and Manchuria Lost territory to China but gained it back Japan took over in After WWII, North Korea went to Soviet Union and South Korea became independent, supported by the US Korean War – North invaded South and treaty divided the two between a Communist North Korea and democratic South Korea Since 2000, there have been very small steps toward repairing their relationship

Both have huge armies North – over 1 million soldiers, nuclear testing, and possible chemical weapons South – 600,000 soldiers and sailors Trying to reunite Removing land mines 2000 Olympics – competed under single flag 2010 – South Korean ship exploded and sank (torpedo) Pre-war – economies were agricultural Post-war – economies became industrialized South Korea is economic tiger – if united with North Korea, North could provide raw materials for South’s industries (shipbuilding, automobile, steel, chemical) Many live in rural areas, but cities are large in the region
