Presentation on theme: "Ionic and Covalent Bonds"— Presentation transcript:

1 Ionic and Covalent Bonds
EQ: Why do atoms form chemical bonds?

2 What is a Compound? Substance made of the combined atoms of two or more elements

3 What is a Chemical Formula?
Tells what elements a compound contains and the exact number of the atoms of those elements

4 Superscript- Represents oxidation number or how many electrons has been gained or lost Coefficient- Represents the number of units of each substance 2H2O SO42- Subscript- Represents number of atoms in a molecule of a particular element

5 Why is bonding important?
Atoms form compounds to become chemically stable. An atom is chemically stable when the outer energy level is complete or full.

6 What is a Chemical Bond? Force that holds together the atoms in a substance

7 ION: Positive or negatively charged atom
What is an Ionic Bond? Loses or gains electron (e- are ripped away from an element) Attraction between opposite charges of ions Between metal & nonmetal ION: Positive or negatively charged atom

8 What is a Covalent Bond? Shares e- Can form multiple bonds.
Between an nonmetal and a nonmetal.

9 Summary Please take this time to write your summary.
