Statement of Inquiry/ Inquiry Questions
Developing approaches to learning skills over time may increase student success on rigorous objectives, tasks, and life- long learning. What are Approaches to Learning skills? Why should students learn and use Approaches to Learning skills? Are some skills more appropriate than others for certain grade levels?

What skills and knowledge do you need to….
Bake a Soufflé? Drive to Alaska? Measuring ingredients Reading instructions Prepping supplies Egg yolks and egg whites Mixing vs. Folding Accuracy Perseverance Focus and concentration Self talk and positive thinking Organization Using technology appropriately Planning pit stops Driving a car Distance and speed Calculating miles per gallon Traffic patterns Weather Organization Research Are there any skills that you want to add or did not think of? What do you notice about the skills and knowledge needed?

Set goals Organize Time Use various strategies Select and use appropriate technology Use visual diagrams Generate metaphors and analogies Give and receive feedback Make inferences and draw conclusions Reflect on learning Identify strengths and weakness Are there any skills that they want to add or did not think of? What do you notice about the skills and knowledge needed? This is were the ATL skills in the IB programme comes in to support student success.

What and Why: Approaches to Learning Skills
Approaches to Learning provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of knowledge and skills in unfamiliar context. LEARN HOW TO LEARN. Purpose of the ATL skills: Develop tools for learning Develop self-regulated independent learners Transfer of skill development across all learning areas

Review the Self- Management category and the clusters MYP (Organization, Reflection, Affective) DP (Organization, Affective) Read and annotate the handout: One word, one phrase, and one sentence Now we will take a deeper dive into one category.

Self-Management What Self- Management skills do your students need to prepare for a test in your subject area? Any subject? Affective Organization Reflective What would that learning experience look like for your students? Look back at their original list and use the handouts to choose skills for each cluster under self- management.
