2. University-led course – Primary Education PGCE
Full time one year training qualification
Primary (3 – 11 year olds)

3. Structure of the PGCE primary course
Four modules:
Curriculum Studies - coverage of all National Curriculum subjects with an emphasis on English and Mathematics
Developing Professional Practice (DPP) – emphasis is on learning and teaching
Two assessed School-Based Training (SBT) experiences and directed tasks to complete in school (120 days)

6. How will I study? Through:
a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops
engaging with on-line material
independent study to develop subject knowledge and pedagogy
reflecting on practice

7. School-based training
This is organised by the Partnership office which arranges almost 1000 places each year across all ITT programmes.
Most partnership schools are in Hertfordshire (or very near to Hertfordshire).
School based training can only be within schools who are in partnership with UH

8. What is my time commitment?
Programmes starts early September
Full time - expectation of 40 hours study each week (attendance / directed work with colleagues / independent)
Campus sessions are usually scheduled between 9.00am and 6.00pm
During placement school times will vary (to include attendance at staff meetings, INSET etc)

9. Assessment Coursework is assessed through assignments – no exams
You also need to pass school based training elements which are assessed against the 2012 Teachers’ Standards

14. What happens in school? Observation Teaching practice
Observing lessons and completing school based tasks
Teaching practice
Teaching gradually building to 16 hours a week by the middle of the programme over two adjacent age ranges. Those on the School Direct (fee paying) Programme must be supernumerary.

15. Training Phase and Age Ranges offered
All trainees are taught for the entire primary phase (ages 3-11)
School-based training takes place in one of the following age range:
- EYFS and KS1 (age range 3-7)
- KS1 and KS2 (age range 5-11)
- Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 (age range 7-11)

School Direct partnerships work with University of Hertfordshire as an accredited provider
The training places are assigned to the Lead School
Successful applicants must be acceptable to both the lead school and accredited provider

18. Entry requirements
GCSE English Language, mathematics and science Grade C or above Grade 4 from 2017) We do not accept equivalency tests.
Honours degree (2:2 or above)
We recommend that applicants undertake observation time in a state primary school prior to interview but this is not essential (sheet provided with suggested activities, see go.herts.ac.uk/x171)
Pass Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy by 31st August 2108
Entry is also subject to an interview, DBS check, Declaration of Disqualification by Association and response to targeted and relevant health questions (NCTL )
We may consider applicants with an ordinary or 3rd class degree if they have evidence of higher level study (masters or PhD)
Overseas qualifications should be checked via UK NARIC before application. See

20. Tuition fees (PGCE routes)
£9,250 maximum*
You may be eligible for a student loan that is not paid back until you are in employment
