Cradle to Grave Control of Radioactive Sources:
The ARCAL Regional Effort Several countries in the Caribbean and Latin America utilize sealed radioactive sources (SRS), in some cases with weak or no regulatory infrastructure. Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) have the potential, and in many cases, have become orphan sources. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Regional Technical Cooperation Project “Strengthening Cradle-to-Grave Control of Radioactive Sources”, allows these member states to approach the issue of DSRS in a holistic manner. Desired Project outcomes include, inter alia: Inventory of SRS and repository for DSRS, Establishment of policies, strategies and regulatory framework for management of SRS throughout life cycle, Establishing and/or improvement of regulatory capabilities and control. Ultimate objective is a proper, harmonized and comprehensive control of DSRS to ensure the safe and secure use of radioactive sources throughout their life cycle in the Caribbean region.
