The first day on a new job is a time of excitement & anxiety.
Write a list of questions and concerns you might have on your first day of work. Write a list of what you could do to answer your questions & address your concerns 9/17/2018

Having a good first day Figure out how long it will take you to get ready & get to work then get up even earlier Don’t make yourself more nervous by running late & then hurrying to get to your job on time What would your new supervisor think if you were late? Company culture Behavior, attitudes, values, & habits of the employees & owners that are unique to a particular company After #2…learning the company culture will take you a while. Until you understand it, take your time trying to fit in. You don’t have to do a lot of talking your first few days. Concentrate on listening & observing. 9/17/2018

Dressing for the job Unless your job calls for a uniform, it’s hard to know what to wear The majority of companies are now moving toward more casual dress There’s no “norm” though How do you know what to wear? 3. what’s correct in one office may not be correct in another. 4. When you show up for your interview, observe what other people are wearing. Make it a point of asking about the dress code. 9/17/2018

Learning the ropes You’ll have a lot to prepare for & think about on your first day Your employer will also be preparing for you Orientation Program that will introduce you to the company’s policies, values, & benefits May get a tour, meet coworkers, & shown where lunchroom & restrooms are Mentors Informal teachers or guides who help new employees adjust to the workplace 9/17/2018

Company policies Specific policies that spell out what the company expects of you & what you can expect of them May be given a company manual of official policies Make sure you understand them 9/17/2018

Sample policies What happens if you’re late to work?
When do you get paid? How many sick days will you be paid each year? What happens when you need more days than you’re allowed? How much vacation time do you get and when can you take it? What paid holidays does the company grant? When will you receive a raise? What will be the basis for it? 9/17/2018

What you can expect from your employer?
Payment (basic payment methods) Hourly wage Overtime Nonexempt employees Exempt employees Salary Commission Critical Thinking - Imagine that you work in a sales job. What are the pros & cons of working for a straight salary versus working for a reduced salary plus a commission? Reasons that people work??? Salary, health insurance, pension, challenging or interesting work, job security Pay may be calculated in a number of ways 1a. Paid on an hourly basis (# hrs x wage)…1b. Pay received for working more than 40 hrs per week (one and one-half times normal hourly rate)…1c. Workers who are normally paid an hourly wage & are entitled to earn overtime…1d. Workers who earn a 1e. salary (fixed amount regardless of hours worked) don’t get overtime…1f. Earnings based on how much a person sells. Motivates salespeople to work harder 9/17/2018

Benefits The “extras” that a company provides in addition to pay
Can range from health care to child care to gym memberships. How does a health-club membership benefit both the employees and employers? There may be a waiting period for new employees to become eligible Benefits average about 40% of employers’ payrolls What role should benefits play in your decision about accepting a job offer? 9/17/2018

Types of benefits Health benefits (most sought after)
Retirement plans (pension) Convenience benefits Cafeteria plan Have risen sharply over the last 20 years and it will continue. Many employers have increased the amount employees have to pay Builds a retirement fund for each worker. Some employers make contributions for each worker. Services that make workers’ lives easier. I.E. flexible work hours, legal counsel, fitness center A policy that lets employees choose the benefits they want. Not all employees want or need the same benefits, so they let employees choose those they do want. 9/17/2018

Honest & fair treatment
You have a right to expect your employer to be honest with you i.e. re: pay, benefits, work situation You also have a right to be treated fairly by employer & co-workers 9/17/2018

Evaluations Performance reviews Probation
Meetings between you & your supervisor to evaluate how well you’re doing the job Promotions, pay increases, and new responsibilities may be based on them Probation Period after you are first hired when you are “on trial” Your employer will decide whether you are suited to the job 9/17/2018

Standard separation procedures
Termination (fired) Poor job performance…your employer should have a clear policy for handling these situations Layoffs When business is slow May be re-hired when business improves Keep your job-hunting network active & skills up-to-date incase of job loss Put aside money to help you through a time of unemployment 9/17/2018
