Follow directions quickly. 2. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 3. Raise your hand leave your seat. 4. Make smart choices. Plagiarism will not be tolerated! 5. Keep your dear teacher HAPPY. Always do your own work! Class Expectations Be in seat when tardy bell rings. Put proper heading on all papers. Phones go in the holder before the bell. Use restroom with permission. 5. Bring all of your supplies to class daily. 6. Complete all of your work and turn it in on time. 7. All NDHS rules and policies shall be observed within the classroom. Course Description Welcome to 11th Grade Honors English! Our focus this school year will be on learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills not only is important to achieving success in the English classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now thorough adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, and verbal praise! Where do I go to find assignments? Canvas is our class website. This site will house the weekly work, assignment due dates, PDF copies of class handouts, important announcements, and more. You will use your Powerschool ID to log in to Canvas. You will be expected to know your log in! What will I learn? The English III curriculum has students analyze United States literature as it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. Aristotle’s three modes of persuasion or appeals (Ethos, Logos, and Pathos) will be central components to the course. In addition, students will attempt different critical lenses as they analyze literature. The emphasis in English III is critical analysis of texts through reading, writing, speaking, and using media.. Honors English 3 will have the following characteristics: A higher level of cognition and quality of work than the standard course Active  involvement  in the classroom learning experiences Exploratory, experimental, and open-ended learning

Grade Scale Parents and students are strongly encouraged to check the Parent Portal on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class.. You should download the Canvas app too. A = 90%-100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 59% and below What do I do if I am absent? Always check the class Canvas site for instructions, handouts, and assignment due dates. A student has two extra days to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. Do I have to read outside of class? All students will be expected to read independently on a daily basis. Students must bring our current book to school so they are prepared for independent reading. The Honors English 3 classroom will be more student-centered with investigative assignments, in-depth research opportunities, presentation of group research using multi-media, independent study, open class discussions, seminars, formal presentations as a result of research, multiple opportunities for authentic and experiential learning opportunities, and scholarly dialogue. Instruction does include higher-level critical and creative thinking skills such as analysis, interpretation, constructive criticism and knowledge utilization (decision-making, problem-solving, investigation, logical thought) and knowledge creation.. Therefore, daily reading is critical. Grade Breakdown Major= 60% (Tests, Projects, Essays) Minor= 40% (Vocabulary, Class Work) What types of writing will I do this year? Constructed Responses: refers to the weekly writing students will complete. Major Research Essay: All juniors will write a research paper. More information on this will come as we get closer to the project. Supplies What are the required readings this year? One pair of earbuds or headphones 3 Ring Binder with dividers College-ruled filler paper Multiple pencils and pens One chunky eraser One set of 12 or more colored pencils One set of four or more highlighters We will be reviewing literature in a chronological order moving through the different literary periods. From each literary period we will try and survey perspectives from different levels of social classes in order to view the effects of class stratification on the American culture and the distinct voices of United States literature. Major themes that we will be looking at will include, though will not be limited to, the individual versus society, social change, and disillusionment.  This course aligns with the Common Core curriculum.
