4 Objectives Understand and identify the use of adjectives and adverbs in sentences. Understand and evaluate primary/secondary sources in nonfiction. Conduct research into a topic and draft a unique secondary source based on the information. Homework: BRING LORD OF THE FLIES book! Exams: 1st and 3rd period -> Wednesday 2nd and 4th period-> Thursday

5 Nonfiction Gallery Walk
Welcome to the Nonfiction Gallery walk! Get into your pairs and I will put you into groups of three. I will pass out a piece of paper for each of you to fill out.

6 Around the room you will notice that there are stations with numbers on them.
I will assign your group a number. This number will be your starting station. You will have 3 minutes to fill out your sheet per station. If you are on the main idea station, you will have 5 minutes. You must make your way through each station and answer the questions. This will be part of your study guide for tomorrow. You must write in pen.

In your pairs, download the worksheet from Google classroom. Each of you will fill out a worksheet. Make sure you follow the directions. If you have questions, ask your partner first, look at your notes second, and ask me last.

15 William Golding... Lord of the Flies, was published in England in 1954. The idea came from a children’s story about an island coupled with Golding’s war experiences.

16 Author Notes:William Golding
Golding was born in Cornwall, Great Britain. He went to college at Oxford and started out as a natural science major before changing to English literature. He worked as a actor, writer, producer, and school teacher.

17 William Golding Golding joined the British Royal Navy and was involved in WWII. His experiences in WWII gave him the idea to write a book about human nature and evil. He won the Nobel Prize in 1983

18 Allegory: A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one A symbol. What might this story be an allegory for?

19 A brief synopsis... British schoolboys are stranded on an uninhabited island after a plane crash. Island whereabouts unknown. During a fictional nuclear war (not WWII).

21 You might hurt your brain….
…If you over think this story. Don’t think about all adults dying and all children alive. Don’t think about where they were flying. Don’t think about the island location.

22 Lord of the Flies notes You will have a quiz on chapters 1-4.
You should read approximately 10 pages a night to keep up I have a Close reading guidelines on my website. You must annotate the close reading objectives while you read. I will collect your books to grade the annotations. You will be allowed to use your book on the quiz to jog your memory.

23 Pacing Guide: November 10... Chapters 5-8 November 17... Chapter 9-12
For each reading, you will complete the annotations in your books. I will pick up the book when the chapters are due. If you do not have your book then you will receive a zero until the late work is turned into me. You can also expect a quiz the day the chapters are due.

24 Closure – 3, 2, 1 Write three standards you are going to study for midterms. Write two things you remembered today from Nonfiction. Write one example main idea statement.
