Originally designed for college students, Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world's largest social network, with more than 1 billion users worldwide. 6 Social Media LinkedIn With over 175 million members worldwide, LinkedIn is the largest social media site dedicated solely to professional networking. Professional networking—the act of building and maintaining a group of contacts to help advance your career. You can also add different contacts, known as connections, to build your network. LinkedIn serves as a kind of online résumé. The majority of job seekers found their most recent position by networking, either through referrals or direct contact with a hiring manager. Also, employers have started using LinkedIn to screen and recruit potential candidates.

8 Social Media Twitter Twitter is a Microblog, allowing each post to consist of 140 characters or less. Its focus is on what is happening right now with you, your friends and contacts, and with the organizations you care about. People tweet about whatever they are experiencing in the moment: television programs, political debates/speeches, movies, concerts and events. The character limit makes people find creative ways to say what they want to say.

Known for sharing/displaying favorite recipes and fashions, but easy way to COLLECT things you find online and like—sort of like visual bookmarks. People use pin boards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share craft ideas.

In order to enjoy the benefits of social networking, while minimizing the inherent risks, is to remain: SKEPTICAL of any requests for information CAUTIOUS of any information you put online Assume that everything you put on a social networking site is permanent Talk to your kids about social networking
