1 Lesson 5.8 Mean, Median and Mode
Essential Question: What can you use the mean, median, mode and range for?

2 Before we start… The University of Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team point guard, Skylar Diggins, is averaging 16.4 points per game. What does that mean?

3 What is the mean? The mean of a data set is the sum of the values divided by the number of values. It’s the average. To find your mean, add up all the points and divide.

4 What is the median? The median of a data set is the middle value when the values are written in numerical order. If a data set has an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values. To find the median, write your data in order from least to greatest and find the one in the middle.

5 What is the mode? The mode of a data set is the value that occurs most often. A data set can have no mode, one mode, or more than one mode.

6 What is the range? The range of a data set is the difference of the greatest value and the least value. The range measures how spread out the data are.

7 What is an outlier? An outlier is a value in a data set that is much greater or much less than the other values. Outliers affect the mean in a set of data.

8 What is the purpose of the mean, median, mode and range?
The mean, median, mode, and range are used to describe a set of data. They provide information about what is happening with the data set.

9 Biology A marine biologist records the following locations of 6 deep sea jellyfish in relation to the ocean surface: feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, and feet. What is the mean location of the deep sea jellies?

10 Income In four months, a business earned $585, $1250, $973 and $907
Income In four months, a business earned $585, $1250, $973 and $907. Find the mean income.

11 Bowling You are bowling three games
Bowling You are bowling three games. In the first two games, you score 125 and 113 points. How many points do you need in the third game to have a mean score of 126 points?

12 Find the median, mode, and range of the prices.
$7.20, $13.25, $14.94, $16.56, $18.74, $19.99, $29.49

13 Find the median, mode, and range of the masses.
0.8 𝑘𝑔, 1.2 𝑘𝑔, 1.4 𝑘𝑔, 0.75 𝑘𝑔, 1.05 𝑘𝑔, 0.6 𝑘𝑔, 0.9 𝑘𝑔, 0.75 𝑘𝑔

14 Taste Test Ten people try a new cereal and rate it on a scale of 1 to 20. The ratings are shown below. Which averages best represent the data? 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 20 mean and median B) mode and median C) mean and mode D) mean, median, mode

15 Service Ratings Ten people rate a service on a scale of 1 to 10
Service Ratings Ten people rate a service on a scale of 1 to 10. Which averages be represent the data? 2, 4, 6, 6, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10 mean and median B) mode and median C) mean and mode D) mean, median, mode

16 Basketball In basketball practice, the numbers of free throws made out of 20 shots are listed below. Find the mean, median, mode and range of each set of data. Who is the more consistent player? Kendra: 8, 10, 9, 9, 10, 12, 10, 11 Jade: 8, 5, 9, 12, 13, 10, 7, 11

17 Data Find the outlier in the data set:
318, 390, 592, 388, 375, 350, 410, 395 Find the mean, median and mode of the data set with the outlier and without the outlier. Which average is most affected by the outlier?

18 What can you use the mean, median, mode and range for?

19 Ticket Out the Door Find the median: 156, 212, 538, 77, 388, 419, 212
