Characteristics of a profession:
Professional association, regulated by law, with responsibilities of enforcement
Cognitive base,
Institutionalized training,
Licensing, accreditation
Work autonomy: can make independent judgments about their work
Colleague control... (and) code of ethics,
High standards of professional and intellectual excellence,
"professions are occupations with special power and prestige,"
“professionals have a high degree of systematic knowledge”
they comprise "an exclusive elite group," in all societies
