3. The Race with the Soviets
October 4, 1957, the Soviets launched the Sputnik I satellite into space. In November, they launched the satellite Sputnik II, carrying a dog.

4. President Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
National Defense and Education Act (NDEA) authorized $887 million for the improvement of teaching sciences and languages.

The number of "white-collar" (no manual labor) workers exceeded the number of "blue-collar" (manual labor) workers.
Following suit, union memberships began to steadily decline.

Betty Friedan published in 1963 The Feminine Mystique, helping to launch the modern women's movement.
