The Race with the Soviets
October 4, 1957, the Soviets launched the Sputnik I satellite into space. In November, they launched the satellite Sputnik II, carrying a dog.

Aerospace industries also grew in the 1950s, thanks to government spending and to an expanding passenger airline business. The number of "white-collar" (no manual labor) workers exceeded the number of "blue-collar" (manual labor) workers. Following suit, union memberships began to steadily decline.
