Use Slides 3-7 to introduce students to fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, the key organic materials in food. They can fill in the cells for those materials on the worksheet as they discuss each organic material.

4. Science Concepts and Vocabulary
Together we’ll take notes in our lab notebook about the ideas of semi-permeability, diffusion, and osmosis

5. The structure of the cell membrane
Together we will use a worksheet to label the parts of the cell membrane (overhead projector)

6. New vocabulary
Semi-permeable: some molecules move through membrane but other’s cannot (protein/starch)
Concentration gradient: a difference in in the concentration of molecules in/out of a cell
Diffusion: the movement of a molecules from high concentration to low concentration.
Osmosis: Movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane, from high to low concentration.
