Opening Activity: Oct 21, 2016 Describe the controversy discussed in the article about HeLa cells (write in your lab notebook) List a question do you have about this topic? Write out your thoughts about the way the cells were handled. I can… Take notes about important science concepts Use resources to investigate questions about the cell membrane Homework: CER will be due Monday Food Molecules quiz Tuesday
2
Class data We’ll identify trends and claims from the data collected by all four of Ms. Fox’s biology classes See handouts
3
: Why would water and glucose move through the membrane but not starch or proteins?
SUGAR (GLUCOSE) CARBOHYDRATES: FATS STARCH Molecule Credit: Craig Douglas, Michigan State University Use Slides 3-7 to introduce students to fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, the key organic materials in food. They can fill in the cells for those materials on the worksheet as they discuss each organic material. FIBER PROTEINS
4
Science Concepts and Vocabulary
Together we’ll take notes in our lab notebook about the ideas of semi-permeability, diffusion, and osmosis Chose the Cornell, Outline, or Mind Map method
5
The structure of the cell membrane
Together we will use a worksheet to label the parts of the cell membrane (overhead projector)
6
New vocabulary Semi-permeable: some molecules move through membrane but other’s cannot (protein/starch) Concentration gradient: a difference in in the concentration of molecules in/out of a cell Diffusion: the movement of a molecules from high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis: Movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane, from high to low concentration.

Lab writing assignment and resources
Your teacher will pass out the rubric for this assignment and we’ll review the requirements as a class Check out the class questions (on poster paper) Use resources to investigate your additional questions (HIMS library books, articles, online resources on HIMS bio) You’ll staple your predictions lab report to your CER writing and turn in on Monday 10/ 21
8
Class list of questions
What is the size and scale of the parts of cell membrane? How does water move through the cell membrane? What would happen to the cell if the membrane was broken or damaged? How is the fluid on the inside and outside of the cell the same or different? What interactions are happening at the cell membrane? (inside or outside the cell)
