2 PROKARYOTES vs EUKARYOTES Biology Section 7.3

3 Prokaryotes – do not contain any organelles with membranes
All cells contain organelles BUT not all organelles are surrounded by membranes Prokaryotes – do not contain any organelles with membranes Most of these are unicellular (one celled) like bacteria

4 Eukaryotic cells – contain membrane-bound organelles
Most of these are multicellular (many celled) Because organelles have distinct compartments, chemical reactions can be carried out at the same time in different organelles.

5 Comparison of size Eukaryotic cells are generally 100x larger than prokaryotic cells.

6 Cells

7 Prokaryote vs. eukaryote
Both have cytoplasm, ribosomes, cell membrane, DNA Prokaryotes X smaller Prokaryotes DNA in circular chromosome in nucleoid region, eukaryotes DNA in linear chromosome in nucleus Prokaryotes= no membrane bound organelles (ex. Nucleus), Eukaryotes have membrane bound organelles

8 First: Cell Boundaries
Plasma Membrane Boundary of cell, allows materials to cross

9 Cell Wall Additional support and protection to plant cells, Outside cell membrane

10 manages cell, contains DNA
Nucleus Cell Control manages cell, contains DNA

11 Chromatin jumbled strands of DNA In nucleus Chromatin

12 Nucleolus Makes ribosomes, inside nucleus

13 Ribosomes Ribosomes Makes proteins

14 Nuclear Envelope Surrounds nucleus

15 Assembly in the cell

16 Clear, gel-like fluid inside a cell, chemical reactions
Cytoplasm Clear, gel-like fluid inside a cell, chemical reactions

17 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Folded membranes, transports materials through out cell

18 2 Types of ER Rough ER Ribosomes attached, makes proteins
Smooth ER No ribosomes attached, makes lipids (detoxification)

19 Golgi Apparatus Flattened stack of membranes, Sorts and packages

20 Vacuoles Storage for food, water, enzymes, and waste

21 Lysosomes Digestion (old organelles, food particles, viruses or bacteria)

22 Ever wondered how a tadpole gets rid of its tail and grows legs??
Lysosomes Ever wondered how a tadpole gets rid of its tail and grows legs?? Lysosomes digest the cells in the tail, and these molecules are released to build different cells, like legs!

23 Energy Transformers Chloroplasts
Trap light for photosynthesis, plant cells only!

24 Powerhouse, makes energy Ex. Muscle cells have lots of these
Mitochondria Powerhouse, makes energy Ex. Muscle cells have lots of these

25 Support and Locomotion
Cytoskeleton Framework of cell microfilaments: Solid (ex. Cytoplasmic streaming) microtubules: hollow (ex. Cilia, flagella)

26 Centrioles Helps cell division of animal cells

27 Cilia Flagella Short hairs for movement Long tail for movement

28 Organization CellsTissuesOrgansOrgan systemsOrganisms

29 Review questions What 2 cell parts are found in plant but not animal cells? Which organelle is found in animal cells only?
