15 Upcoming Projects Backup microwave connection to Hagerstown / Frostburg Suggested by Mark Cather, UMBC Path will run from UMBC → Hagerstown 911 center → Frostburg Lowndes Hall Partnership between UMATS, networkMaryland, and Sailor Will provide an alternate path in case of fiber cut

16 Upcoming Projects Maryland Broadband Cooperative
MDBC is running fiber from VA line across Bay Bridge Salisbury University is providing MDBC rack space Fiber currently runs to NASA / Wallops Island, VA UMATS will be providing a DS-3 connection for NASA through June, 2008 MDBC will provide 2 pairs of dark fiber from Salisbury across the Bay Bridge when construction is completed UMATS will join MDBC Many future possibilities

17 BERnet Baltimore Education and Research Network
Not directly part of UMATS Started in 2003 by Mike McCarthy (JHU), Pat Wallace (Sailor), and Richard Rose (UMATS) Goal was to provide low cost Internet2 access in the Baltimore area Members are UMBC, UMB, JHU, Sailor, Morgan, MAX, UMATS, and the City of Baltimore

Initial funding paid for Ciena and Juniper equipment to provision and utilize an unprotected OC-48 from College Park to Baltimore, over existing networkMaryland fiber Intra-city connections were donated by the City of Baltimore Converted to DWDM ring in Summer 2006 Major upgrade planned for 2007 10 Gb Layer2/3 connection along diverse paths Unprotected Layer1 connections to NLR, MIT, other MAX customers, and each other

19 Community College Video Network
CCs will replace MIDLN codecs with standards based (H.323) codecs – Polycom HDX 9002/4 CCs paying for 2 Polycom RMX 2000 video bridges UMATS orders, installs and manages video bridges UMATS orders and pays for T1s UMATS provides central routers CCs pay flat “postal” rate for each site UMATS will hire a student for evening IVN issues Expected completion August 1st, 2007
