Cell Structure & Function

Quick: Discuss with your table partner what you think a cell is
Quick: Discuss with your table partner what you think a cell is. What do you think a Cell does?
3
Scientific Discoveries about the Cell
Robert Hooke-first person to see cells and use the term “cell”. Thought it looked like many boxes under the microscope. Anton van Leeuwenhoek- saw first living single celled organism under a microscope. Schwann, Shleiden & Virchow- Cell Theory
4
All Cells have 3 basic features
1) Cell membrane- thin, semi-permeable barrier that surrounds and encloses the contents of a cell. It supports and helps maintain a cell's shape.
5
2) Genetic Material-DNA
3)Cytoplasm-is a thick solution that fills each cell and is enclosed by the cell membrane.
6
2 Types of Cells-Prokaryote & Eukaryote
1)no membrane bound nucleus 2)Chromosomes grouped together in an area called the “nucleoid” 3)No membrane bound organelles 4)smaller than the eukaryote cells
7
Eukaryote Organelles-membrane-bound structures in a cell that performs a special function. Nucleus Golgi apparatus Lysosome Mitochondrion Endoplasmic reticulum ribosome Has a membrane bound nucleus and organelles Plants, animals, fungi and protista cells
8
Organelle functions Nucleus-control center for the cell
Golgi apparatus-gathers simple molecules and combines them to make molecules that are more complex Lysosome-hold enzymes that were created by the cell. The purpose of the lysosome is to digest things Mitochondria- act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum-functions as a manufacturing and packaging system Ribosome-are the protein builders or the protein synthesizers of the cell
9
Quick Review-answer these questions on paper and turn them in for credit. Don’t forget your name on the paper What are the two main types of cells? Which one is larger? Which one does not have a membrane bound nucleus? What are the three main parts of the cell? (what all cells have) What is an organelle? List 3 different organelles. Who coined the term “cell”? What are the three components of the cell theory? Name one of the 3 scientists who contributed to the cell theory. What did Anton van Leeuwenhoek discover?
